Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The loss snapped two streaks: a five-game winning streak for Savannah and a six-game losing streak for Charleston.
The Gnats (24-26) scored first, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning against Charleston starter Andre Del Bosque. First baseman Jon Leroux began the inning with a double and then scored on left fielder Joe Tuschak's RBI triple up the right-centerfield gap. Tuschak scored on catcher Tyler Moore's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Savannah lead.
The RiverDogs (24-26), who had scored just eight runs in the first three games of the series, erupted for eight more in the top of the fifth on Sunday. The Dogs took advantage of three Savannah errors in the frame. Shortstop Angel Aguilar's two-run double gave Charleston the lead for good. Seven of the eight runs scored in the fifth came off Savannah starter Corey Oswalt (3-2), who allowed seven hits, seven runs (five earned), and struck out four.
The Gnats and Dogs each tacked on a run late - Charleston in the seventh, and Savannah in the eighth - but neither affected the outcome, which was decided by the RiverDogs' eight-run fifth inning.
Sand Gnats' reliever LHP David Roseboom tossed a perfect-inning in the ninth.
The Sand Gnats will travel to Asheville, NC to take on the Tourist for three games at McCormick Field. The Gnats took two of the three-game series against Asheville last week at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah will start LHP Brad Wieck (2-4, 3.09) in game one on Monday. Wieck earned the win against Asheville at home last Tuesday. The Tourist will send RHP Ryan Castellani (0-4, 3.38) to the mound in the series opener. Castellani took the loss in his last start against the Gnats on May 27th. The Savannah Sand Gnats will return home on Thursday, June 4th for Budweiser Thirsty Thursday with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
