Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Salisbury, MD- May 31, 2015)- The West Virginia Power edged the Delmarva Shorebirds 4-3 in ten innings on Sunday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Power closed their seven game road trip with three straight wins and won five times on the trip to move their road record above .500 for the first time since April 21.
The Power got the jump on the Shorebirds with a run against starting pitcher Josh Walker in the first inning. Elvis Escobar singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a single by Connor Joe. Michael Suchy's sac fly drove in Escobar and gave the Power a 1-0 advantage. Delmarva evened the score in the fourth on two hits and an error.
The Power recaptured the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Pablo Reyes singled and moved to third on a double from Joe. With no one out, Suchy grounded out to the second baseman Ronarsy Ledesma, allowing Reyes to score and give West Virginia a short-lived 2-1 edge. An Elier Leyva sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth brought home Cam Kneeland to tie the game at two.
In the top of the tenth with two outs, Connor Joe singled and scored on a double by Michael Suchy. Jerrick Suiter followed with a single to plate Suchy and extended the Power lead at 4-2. The insurance run proved necessary as the Shorebirds loaded the bases for the third differ time in the game, scoring once in the bottom of the tenth on a walk before leaving the bases full.
Alex McRae made his tenth start for West Virginia, but did not factor in the decision. McRae allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings with six strikeouts. Sam Street (3-0) earned the win with three-plus innings of work and Nick Neumann notched the final three outs for his seventh save. Mike Burke (0-1) took the loss after allowing both tenth inning runs.
Suchy drove in three of the four Power runs and Joe had his first professional three hit game.
West Virginia returns home on Monday, June 1, to begin a three-game set against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. For tickets or promotional information, visit www.wvpower.com.
