THE LEAD OFF: The Power topped the Lexington Legends on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park 6-1. The Legends got on the board right away in the first inning when Frank Schwindel blasted a solo home run. The Power, however, took control from that point on. West Virginia tied the game in the third with a Michael Fransoso RBI single and took the lead in the fourth when Erich Weiss doubled in a run. The Power blew the game wide open in the sixth inning with three runs on RBI hits from Francisco Diaz and Chris Diaz. Felipe Gonzalez tossed six strong innings to earn the win while Alec Mills was charged with the loss.
HERE IT GOES AGAIN: The Power have played Lexington more than any other opponent during their nine previous seasons. The cross-division rivals are only two-and-a-half hours apart along I-64 and have played 185 times since the start of the 2005 season. West Virginia leads the all-time series 94-91 with a 4-7 mark against Lexington in 2014. The Legends hold the upper hand in Charleston, having a 49-39 mark.
FINAL STRETCH: The Power have 28 games remaining in the 2014 season. 16 of the 28 games will match West Virginia with either Lexington or Asheville. The Power have 8 games left with the Legends, including today's affair. Meanwhile, West Virginia will see Asheville eight more times before the season concludes. Nin of the 16 will have the Power on the road.
COMING ON STRONG: Power southpaw Cody Dickson has been a very different hurler in the second half of the season. Dickson went 2-8 with a 5.58 ERA in the first half in 13 starts, allowing eight home runs. In the second half, Dickson has posted a 2.70 ERA with a 3-0 record in eight starts, allowing no home runs.
YOU'VE GOTTA BE SPLITTIN' ME: The West Virginia Power have split six series this year of the 31 played. The Power have the opportunity to split their seventh series with a win on Sunday. The Power split their most recent series at home with the Rome Braves (July 18-21).
UNLIKELY HEROES: On Saturday's Power victory over Lexington, it was the bottom of the lineup that did the majority of the damage for West Virginia. Erich Weiss, Wyatt Mathisen, Francisco Diaz and Chris Diaz combined to 7-14 with three doubles, a triple, five runs scored and three runs batted in.
GOOD AND BAD NEWS: Before Friday's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates placed Jeff Roy on the Power Disabled List after a knee injury sustained on July 29 in Rome. The outfielder was hitting .216 with a home run and 10 RBIs in his time with West Virginia. Meanwhile, the Pirates activated infielder Chris Diaz from the Disabled List. Diaz was placed on the Disabled List on 7/21 and was hitting .216 with 18 runs batted in.
LATE BLOOMERS: The West Virginia Power won 20 games in the first half of the 2014 season. With 28 games remaining in the second half, the Power hit that mark on Saturday night with a 6-1 win. West Virginia won their 20th game of the first half on May 30 with a 6-2 victory at Greensboro.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 23: The Power battle the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday, August 23 at Appalachian Power Park on for Back to School Night. Backpacks will be given away to the first 1,000 fans 12 and under for the 7:05 first pitch.
POWER POINTS: On Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated Jake Burnette from the West Virginia Power Disabled List and placed Burnette on the Bristol Pirates acitve roster...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh toppled the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 last night. The Pirates scored four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull away... Indianapolis edged Toledo 4-3 in 10 innings. Starling Marte was 0-4 in a rehab start... Altoona edged Richmond 7-6. Elis Diaz drove in three runs in the win... Bradenton fell to Brevard County 4-2... Jamestown's matchup with Lowell was postponed due to rain.
