Hickory Crawdads News Release
Savannah, GA - The Hickory Crawdads received the best outing of the season from starting pitcher Collin Wiles and a nearly as dominant relief appearance from hurler Patrick Kaminska Sunday afternoon, but the pitching duo's outings came up just short as the 'Dads fell 1-0 to the Savannah Sand Gnats at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Wiles and Savannah starting pitcher John Gant matched up in a pitcher's duel that saw both hurlers take a no-hitter into the 5th inning. The Sand Gnats broke up Wile's no-no bid with a pair of infield hits in the 5th, before the 'Dads finally ended Gant's perfect game with two walks and an infield single in the 7th. Both pitchers finished the day with no-decisions, as Wiles tossed five shutout frames on two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts while Gant ended with seven scoreless frames on one hit, two walks, and 8 Ks.
The scoreless stalemate didn't end until the bottom of the 8th, when 'Gnats center fielder Champ Stuart drove in the only run of the game on a 2-out, infield RBI single that saw the speedy hitter just beat the throw to first base by 'Dads shortstop Luis Marte. The Crawdads attempted a 9th inning rally with a leadoff single from Evan Van Hoosier and a one out walk by Nomar Mazara, but Savannah closer Akeel Morris struck out both Kellin Deglan and Jairo Beras to strand the tying and winning runs on base for the final 1-0 score.
Sand Gnats reliever Bret Mitchell (2-0) earned the win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Kaminska (2-1) was the hard-luck loser for the 'Dads after allowing just one run on three hits, no walks, and two strikeouts over three innings of relief. Morris (12) earned the save for closing out the game.
The Crawdads (24-19) will continue their road trip with a 3-game series in Kannapolis against the Intimidators. First pitch Monday night is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
