Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (11-32, 45-67) were just two outs away from a victory on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field, but the Rome Braves (17-26, 41-72) spoiled that possibility with three runs in the top of the ninth to win 4-2.
The inning began when Jake Schrader reached on a Drive error. After a sac bunt from Ross Wilson, Carlos Franco drove a Taylor Grover (1-5) offering over the wall in right-center for a go-ahead two-run homer. Later in the inning, Connor Lien singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and came in to score on Carlos Sanchez's RBI single.
Caleb Dirks improved to 2-0 after throwing a pair of scoreless innings with three strikeouts to finish the game.
The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Franklin Guzman deposited a long homer over the Green Monster off Steve Janas.
Rome answered in the top of the third when Connor Oliver doubled, stole third and came in when the throw to third sailed into left field. The Drive came right back in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead when Sam Travis singled through the left side to score Jimmy Rider, who began the inning with a single.
Drive starter Daniel McGrath received a no-decision despite a very good outing. In six innings of work, he allowed just one run on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
Johan Camargo went 4-4 at the plate to lead the way for the Braves, and Lien added a pair of hits. Guzman and Travis each collected two hits for Greenville.
The homestand continues on Monday at 7:05 as the Drive welcome the Augusta GreenJackets to town for a three-game series. RH Ty Buttrey (0-3, 10.57) starts on the mound for the Drive, and Augusta's starter is TBD.
