THE LEAD OFF: The West Virginia Power blanked the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park 6-0. The Power raced out to the early lead when Erich Weiss blasted a three-run home run in the first inning. A Chris Diaz RBI single in fourth followed by sacrifice flies off the bats of JaCoby Jones and Edwin Espinal pushed the Power lead to six. Buddy Borden tossed 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts to earn the win. Jarlin Garcia was charged with the loss while JaCoby Jones extended his hit streak to 14 games in the Power victory.
JUMP ON IT: West Virginia concludes its final series with Greensboro today. The Power and Grasshoppers have played 138 times since 2005 when both clubs were re-branded and moved to new ballparks. West Virginia holds a 72-66 lead in the all-time set. The Power lead the series at Appalachian Power Park 38-30, despite being swept by the Grasshoppers in early June in Charleston.
WELCOME TO CHARLESTON: The Pittsburgh Pirates activated 2013's first round draft pick (9th overall) Austin Meadows from the Power Disabled List on Saturday. To make room for the outfielder, Elvis Escobar was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster. In addition, Barrett Barnes was activated from the Power Disabled List and promoted to Bradenton. Meadows had spent time rehabbing in the GCL as well as with the Bristol Pirates before coming to West Virginia. Baseball America considers Meadows to be the fourth-best prospect in the Pirates organization as well as "Closest to the Majors".
JEKYLL AND HYDE: Dovydas Neverauskas has posted 3-6 record in home starts in 2014 with a 7.16 ERA in 11 starts, allowing seven home runs. Neverauskas, however, has been strong on the road with a 1-1 record, 3.27 ERA over six starts while allowing just one long ball.
FINISH THE JOB: The West Virginia Power are in search of their seventh series victory this afternoon. The Power have lost out on 16 series in 2014 while splitting four. The Power have already taken two four-game sets in the second half while splitting another.
BELL TO THE FUTURE: Josh Bell will appear in today's MLB Futures Game for the US Team at Minnesota's Target Field at 5 pm. The former Power outfielder, ranked as the seventh-best Pirates Prospect by Baseball America, was named a 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star and hit .279 with West Virginia with 13 home runs and 76 RBIs. In 2014 with the Bradenton Marauders, Bell is .333 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs and was named a 2014 Florida State League All-Star.
LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON: Including tonight's matchup, West Virginia has 25 home games remaining on the schedule. The Power will play 21 on the road for the remainder of the season. West Virginia will appear at Appalachian Power Park 19 times in August.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 19: The Power battle the Rome Braves on Saturday, July 19 at Appalachian Power Park for Wrestling Night. Wrestler Mick Foley will be in attendance and the first 1,000 fans receive a Power beach towel.
POWER POINTS: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Power pitchers Shane Carle and Yhonathan Barrios to the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday. To fill the open roster spots, the Pirates transferred Robby Rowland from the Bradenton roster to West Virginia and promoted Andy Otamendi from the Jamestown roster to the Power....
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: The Pittsburgh Pirates ousted the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings. Andrew McCutcheon homered to tie it in the ninth and win the game in the 11th... Indianapolis was swept in a doubleheader with Columbus, 4-3 and 2-1... Altoona split a doubleheader, winning 9-1 behind an Alen Hanson home run and falling 3-2... Bradenton edged Tampa 4-3. Shane Carle earned his first win with the Marauders, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs while Yhonathan Barrios tallied the save... Jamestown bested Vermont 3-2.
