Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 13, 2014) - Asheville's Jose Briceno hit two home runs, including a 3-run blast in the first inning, to lead the Tourists to an 8-2 win and series sweep of the Kannapolis Intimidators on Sunday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis (43-49, 14-11 Second Half) has now dropped five straight games.
Asheville's offense went to work early after a game-opening error by first baseman T.J. Williams extended the first inning, eventually setting up Briceno's first blast which gave the Tourists a 3-0 lead. He added a solo home run in the eighth and an RBI-single in the ninth, finishing the evening 3-5 with a season-high five RBI, two home runs (7) and two run scores.
Kannapolis starter Robinson Leyer worked a career-high 7 and 2/3 innings but gave up a career-high three home runs, including back-to-back blasts in the eighth inning, ending his night. Leyer (5-6) allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out two in the loss.
Johendi Jiminian (11-4) picked up the win for Asheville, his league-lead-tying 11th, after holding Kannapolis to two runs on five hits over 6 and 2/3 innings.
After the Tourists built a 5-0 lead through the first two innings, Kannapolis bounced back with a run in the third on Adam Engel's solo home run (4). Nolan Earley doubled to drive in Danny Hayes in the seventh, cutting Asheville lead to 5-2.
Jordan Patterson followed Briceno's eighth-inning blast with one of his own, ending Leyer's night. Andrew Mitchell worked the final 1 and 1/3 innings for the Intimidators.
The Intimidators are off on Monday before beginning a 3-game series at Augusta on Tuesday. The team returns home on Friday for a 4-game home stand against Lakewood. For ticket and promotional information, call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
