THE LEAD OFF: The West Virginia Power's matchup with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park was suspended due to unplayable grounds. The Power held a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning when play was halted. Michael Fransoso led off the bottom of the first with a solo blast. In the third, West Virginia pushed the lead out to three on RBI base knocks from JaCoby Jones and Edwin Espinal. Cody Dickson will not factor in the decision after working four and two-thirds scoreless innings. Play will resume tonight at 6:05 pm to the full nine-inning conclusion before a seven-inning version of the regularly scheduled game.
JUMP ON IT: West Virginia opens its final series with Greensboro tonight. The Power and Grasshoppers have played 135 times since 2005 when both clubs were re-branded and moved to new ballparks. West Virginia holds a 70-65 lead in the all-time set. The Power lead the series at Appalachian Power Park 36-29, despite being swept by the Grasshoppers in early June in Charleston.
FRIENDLY CONFINES: Since the 2013 season with the West Virginia Power, Luis Heredia has enjoyed success while pitching at Appalachian Power Park. In 10 home starts, Luis has posted a 4-1 record with a 2.19 ERA over 45.1 innings. On the road, Luis is 4-4 in 12 starts with a 4.82 ERA over 56 innings pitched.
NOT ONE, NOT TWO, NOT THREE: JaCoby Jones was named the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week on Monday after blasting five home runs over the course of a week. The shortstop hit .500 (12-for-24) over the week with a double, five home runs and seven RBIs. Jones became the first Power player since Jose Osuna in 2012 to homer in three consecutive games on Sunday. JaCoby was also the first Power player to homer twice in a game in 2014 and is now third in the league in long balls.
BULLPEN BARRAGE: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Power pitchers Shane Carle and Yhonathan Barrios to the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday. To fill the open roster spots, the Pirates transferred Robby Rowland from the Bradenton roster to West Virginia and promoted Andy Otamendi from the Jamestown roster to the Power. Rowland and Otamendi will be appearing for the second time in a West Virginia uniform.
WHEELER TO THE BIGS: Zelous Wheeler became the 41st former Power player to reach to Major Leauges on Monday night in his debut with the New York Yankees. Wheeler is the fourth former member of the Power to make his debut this season, along with Gregory Polanco, Casey Sadley and Rudy Owens.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL STAR: Five former Power players were named to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star game with the Altoon Curve. Alen Hanson (2012), Elias Diaz (2011 & 2012), Willy Garcia (2012), Drew Maggi (2011) and Ryan Beckman (2011) were all named All-Stars. The Pirates organization now has had 14 mid-season All-Stars. Former Power outfielder Michael Brantley ('06 & '07) was named a MLB All-Star with the Cleveland Indians.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 12: The West Virginia Power battle the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, July 12, at Appalachian Power Park. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will recieve an Appalachian Power Park replica.
POWER POINTS: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Michael Fransoso to the West Virginia Power roster from Jamestown prior to Monday's matchup in Delmarva. Fransoso was a member of the Power Opening Day roster, appearing in 22 games with a .215 average, one home run and two runs batted in.... On Wednesday, the Pirates designated former Power pitcher Duke Welker for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Matv Hague... JaCoby Jones has hit .473 since returning from the Disabled List on June 28.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh topped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1. Edinson Volquez tossed a complete game allowing just one run... Indianapolis swept a doubleheader with Columbus 1-0 and 14-2. Altoona fell to Erie 12-6... Bradenton bested St. Lucie 4-1. Justin Maffei was 2-for-4 with a run scored... Jamestown was dropped by Tri-City 4-3.
