Shorebirds Game Notes at Lakewood

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds lost the series opener to the Lakewood BlueClaws by a 5-4 final score. Delmarva moved the tying run to third base in both the seventh and eighth innings, but in each instance, they failed to bring the runner across. The Shorebirds will try to even up the series with Luc Rennie on the hill.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Yacksel Rios will start game two for Lakewood on Friday evening. Rios has split time between the bullpen and rotation, going 3-0 with a 3.11 ERA. His last start was a vic- tory over Delmarva, throwing seven innings while allowing only two runs on five hits. In his last two starts, Rios is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA. The right-hander is a native of Puerto Rico, and he just turned 21 years old two weeks ago.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Washington Nationals to take two of three games in the rain-shortened home-and-home series. The O's hung on by the score of 4-3 with a home run from Steve Pearce, his 11th. Wei Yin-Chen improved to 9-3 on the year, while Zach Britton earned his 15th save. Baltimore is 3 games clear of the rest of the AL East at 50-41.

THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.

GREGORY LORENZO | OF

The Shorebirds outfielder has raised up his game since the All-Star Break. Lorenzo is hitting .324 in 20 games in the second half, compared to .243 in the first half. His on-base percentage is .392, up from .303 in the first half. Lorenzo already has 11 RBIs since the break, which is how many he collected in 62 games before the All-Star Game as well.

WHO'S HOT - GARRETT CORTRIGHT

Since allowing a home run to Trey Michalcze- wski during his Shorebirds' debut, Cortright has not allowed another run. His last appear- ance was three perfect innings of relief vs. West Virginia for his first hold.

WHO ELSE - CHANCE SISCO

Since the All-Star Break, Chance Sisco has been otherworldly. The Shorebirds catcher is batting .405 (34-for-84) in 20 games in the second half. Sisco is now 2nd in the SAL with a .341 batting average.
