THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia and Delmarva's series opener slated for Thursday night was postponed due to unplayable grounds. The Power lost 7-2 on Wednesday night to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Hoppers took a 2-0 lead against Buddy Borden in the second and added a run in the third. After an Avery Romero home run pushed Greensboro ahead 4-0, the Power scored twice to halve the deficit. Candon Myles scored on a throwing error in the fifth and Wyatt Mathisen crossed on a ground out by Justin Maffei in the seventh. The Grasshoppers scored three more runs with the benefit of a base hit to clinch a series sweep. Borden took the loss and Jarlin Garcia garnered the win.
11 STRAIGHT: The Power have lost 11 consecutive games. This winless stretch is the longest in franchise history dating back to the 2005 season. No West Virginia team had lost more than eight games in a row at any point over the last nine-plus seasons. Over half of the team's losses this year have come during one of their three longest losing streaks, total 25 games. West Virginia has had losing streaks of 11, eight and seven games this season.
FOUR TO GO: The first half of the 2014 season is set to close with a four game series against Delmarva starting tonight. The Power and Shorebirds have played each other 123 times since 2005 and West Virginia leads the all-time series 62-61. The Power hold a 40-31 mark at home against the Shorebirds. West Virginia open the second half on June 19 at Lakewood as part of a seven game road trip that also takes them to Salisbury to play Delmarva.
DOUBLE DIPPERS: West Virginia and Delmarva will play twice Saturday to make-up Thursday's postponed game. The Power have split each of four twinbills they have played this season while the Shorebirds have played four-and-a-half and are 7-2 on doubleheader dates this season. The 'Birds were slated to play two seven inning games on April 16, but went 15 innings in game one against Hagerstown, so game two was rescheduled.
RAMIREZ STILL STREAKING: Harold Ramirez extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games with a pair of base hits Wednesday night. Ramirez's current streak is his longest this year and the outfielder has reached safely with at least one base hit in 25 of his 33 games.
MORE FLORIDA STARS: Josh Bell and Orlando Castro were named as Florida State League All-Stars when the initial rosters were announced on June 3. The league has added former Power and current Marauders reliever Bryton Trepagnier to the South Division squad. Trepagnier is 3-0 with a 1.86 earned run average. Former West Virginia infielder Dilson Herrera also made the squad, starting at second base for the South Division in the game scheduled for tomorrow night at Bradenton's McKechnie Field.
JUNE SWOON: West Virginia is winless in ten games this month. Power hitters have a .226 average while the staff has a 6.10 ERA since the month began.
