Greenville Drive News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Greenville Drive (33-34) did everything right in Friday's doubleheader sweep of the Hagerstown Suns (43-25), pounding out 11 hits in an 8-2 victory in the opener and riding the right arm of Myles Smith to a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Making a spot start thanks to the postponement of Thursday's game, Smith (3-4) was nothing short of outstanding in the night game, allowing just two hits in six shutout frames with one walk and two strikeouts. Pete Ruiz fired a perfect seventh inning to record his second save.
The Drive scored both of their runs in the third inning against Nick Pivetta (8-3). Zach Kapstein led off the frame with a single, and Aneudis Peralta followed with a walk. After a sac bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, a Tzu-Wei Lin grounder to short was thrown away by Hagerstown's Wilmer Difo, plating both runners.
In the opener, the Drive jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Forrestt Allday smacked a triple to center to lead off the game, and two batters later, Jantzen Witte popped a two-run homer to left field off Hector Silvestre (2-4).
Witte wasn't done there, as he lined RBI singles in the second and sixth innings and finished the game 3-4 with four RBI.
The Suns scored twice off Drive starter Daniel McGrath (2-3) in the second on a two-run single by Brennan Middleton, but McGrath kept them off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing. He gave up just three hits and two walks while punching out four.
Zach Kapstein extended the Drive lead to 4-2 in the third on an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly by Peralta tacked on another run.
Joining Witte with big offensive afternoons were Allday, who picked up three hits and scored three times, Kapstein, who went 2-4 with a pair of RBI, and Carlos Asuaje, who went 2-4.
The Drive will send RH Joe Gunkel (2-0, 2.58) to the mound on Saturday night against Hagerstown RH Lucas Giolito (2-0, 2.06). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
