Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC-- After surrendering a four run lead late in the ballgame, the Asheville Tourists responded with a tenth inning walk off win over the Rome Braves. The ending was exciting and a little controversial. With one out and the winning run at third, David Dahl hit a fly ball to straight away centerfield. Michael Benjamin raced to the plate as Connor Oliver's throw soared through the infield.
Benjamin slid feet first as Orrin Sears gloved the ball and put the tag down. The play was extremely close, but the home plate umpire deemed that Benjamin was safe thus clinching the win for Asheville. Rome's manager Jonathan Schuerholz did not agree but his arguing did not change the result as Benjamin's foot did touch home plate just before the tag was applied.
In the early stages of the game, both teams plated a run in the first inning. Rome's came on an RBI fielder's choice while Asheville's crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, the Braves took a 2-1 lead but it did not last long. Once the Tourists tied the game 2-2 on Emerson Jimenez's RBI groundout, Max White came through with a three run Homer over the scoreboard in right-center.
The Tourists tacked on a run in the fifth off Zach Osborne's two-out RBI single to left, but the Braves made a nice comeback. Rome plated two in the seventh and two more in the eighth to knot the game up 6-6. Asheville's Trent Daniel pitched back-to-back perfect innings in the ninth and tenth to give the offense a chance.
Asheville has now won five home games in a row which matches a season high. Osborne finished with three hits and a crucial sacrifice bunt in the game-winning tenth inning. White, Wilfredo Rodriguez, Correlle Prime, and Raimel Tapia all had two hits and the Tourists combined to steal five bases.
Game three of this series is on Saturday night and will start at 6:05pm.
