Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs begin the second half of their 2014 season against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday, June 19 at 7:05 pm at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with a nationally televised broadcast on CBS Sports Network. For that special night, the RiverDogs' radio broadcast won't just be on the air -- it will also be on the move, as play-by-play man Sean Houston will broadcast the entire game while he lumbers on a treadmill on the walkway behind home plate.
The club has teamed with Play It Again Sports Mt. Pleasant to put together what is believed to be the first "Walk and Talk" style radio broadcast in baseball history. From the moment the broadcast begins at 7 pm on 1250 WTMA and www.riverdogs.com until the time the last word is uttered on the postgame show following the contest, Houston will walk on a treadmill. He is only allowed to step off between innings and during pitching changes.
Houston, who is in his third season behind the microphone as the Voice of the RiverDogs, has called the action of every Charleston home game during his tenure from the home radio booth in the press box at Riley Park. However, with CBS Sports Network broadcasting the tilt against Kannapolis, the home radio booth that night will belong to Dick Gabriel and Doug Flynn, the broadcasters for CBS Sports Network's Minor League Game of the Week.
"I'm more than happy to step aside for a night and let Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Flynn enjoy the cozy confines of the home radio booth at The Joe," said Houston. "In my opinion, it's the best seat in the ballpark. I've called over 170 games from that same spot, and I'm excited to experience a different view for a game. Plus, it will be fun to be able to mingle with the fans a bit on a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, enjoy the legendary atmosphere of The Joe has on a Thursday night, and get a little bit of exercise in the process. It should be a lot of fun. Tiring, but fun."
"Through our affiliation with the 27-time World Series Champion New York Yankees, we're able to showcase some fantastic athletes on the field each and every RiverDogs game at The Joe," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "Though in relatively good shape, Sean is not a great athlete by any stretch of the imagination. I am, however, looking forward to seeing him do something active during a game for a change instead of just sitting. I think it will be enjoyable for everyone, and I'm hoping for a long game with extra innings that night to make Sean work a little bit extra."
Charleston concludes the first half of the season with four games in Lexington, KY against the Lexington Legends (through Sunday) before the All-Star Game on June 17 at Hickory. The season's second half begins on Thursday, June 19 against Kannapolis at The Joe. Tickets may be purchased at the Riley Park Box Office, (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or on-line at www.riverdogs.com for any remaining game this season. If fans cannot make it to the ballpark, they are encouraged to tune in to all the action this year both home and away worldwide on www.riverdogs.comand locally on 1250 WTMA, the new radio home for RiverDogs baseball.
