THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 6-2 to Delmarva on Monday night. The Shorebirds took a 1-0 lead in the first against Power starter Shane Carle, but West Virginia answered with a pair in the home half of the inning. Reese McGuire singled in Harold Ramirez before JaCoby Jones scored on an error. Delmarva plated three in the top of the second to take the lead for good. The Shorebirds added a pair in the eighth against the Power bullpen. Carle took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits over six innings. Steven Brault earned the win after limiting West Virginia to two runs on four hits.
THE NAME IS THE THING: On Saturday, the West Virginia Power front office and Appalachian Power announced the extension of the naming rights agreement for Appalachian Power Park. The stadium, in its tenth season, will remained named after the utility provider for at least the next ten seasons. The initial agreement was slated to expire at the end of the current season and is now signed through the end of the 2024 campaign.
I WANNA FLY AWAY: West Virginia and Delmarva close their four game set this morning. The Power and Shorebirds have played each other 122 times since 2005 and the all-time series is split at 61 wins apiece. The Power hold a 39-31 mark at home against the Shorebirds. The clubs will meet again for a four game series to close the first half.
FOR THE KIDS: The Power host their last Grand Slam School Day of the year today. Since 2005, the club holds a 14-13 mark during home school day dates. So far this season, West Virginia is 4-9 during day games.
A DOZEN STRAIGHT: Reese McGuire's hitting streak has reached twelve straight games after two hits on Monday. The 19-year-old is hitting .391 with 18 hits over his last 46 at bats since May 7. McGuire surpassed Erich Weiss's April streak of 11 games for the longest by a West Virginia player this year. It is also tied the for longest current streak in the league with Savannah's Jeff McNeil.
ELEVEN AND DONE: West Virginia's home losing streak was snapped at eleven with a 7-0 shutout win on Sunday. It is the longest such streak in franchise history, surpassing the previous record of seven in a row during May of the 2008 season. During the skid, the team was out-scored 78-36.
DOUBLE-A CALL: Kawika Emsley-Pai was promoted to Double-A Altoona on Sunday. The catcher has appeared in 10 games for the Power this season after spending portions of 2011 and 2013 with the club. Once he plays for the Curve, it will mark the highest level he has reached in his five year career. Emsley-Pai also made his first career appearance in a game at first base, spelling Edwin Espinal on Wednesday.
KENDALL SIDELINED: Will Kendall, the lone left-hander in the West Virginia bullpen, has been placed on the Power Disabled List by Pittsburgh. The Pirates, in turn, promoted left-hander Jared Lakind from Jamestown. Kendall is 0-2 with a 6.06 ERA for the Power this season. Lakind went 2-2 with a 4.56 ERA for the Jammers in 2013 over 17 appearances after spending three seasons as an infielder in the organization.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 24: West Virginia hosts Lakewood at 7:05 pm on Saturday. It is third annual Redneck Night at Appalachian Power Park and features a mason jar mug giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, a redneck wedding, Olympics, and cuisine. Stock racing legend Bobby Allison will also make a guest appearance.
POWER POINTS: Harold Ramirez's on-base streak reached nine straight after a first inning walk on Monday night while Reese McGuire's has been extended to 16 games, the second longest current streak in the league...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was idle and plays host to Baltimore tonight... Indianapolis split a doubleheader with Gwinnett, losing game one 4-3 in a extra inning walk-off before taking game two by the same score... Altoona bested Akron 4-3... Bradenton won 5-4 in ten at Dunedin. Jon Schwind and Josh Bell homered in the win.
