THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Greensboro 6-3 in 12 innings on Friday. The Power took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly in the top of the second, but the Grasshoppers evened the score on a home run in the bottom half of the inning. Greensboro also held leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but West Virginia rallied back each time, including a game-tying home run by Dilson Herrera with two down in the top of the ninth. In the 12th, the Power scored three times of Jheyson Manzueta on an error, a wild pitch, and a single. Ryan Hafner earned the win and Jhondaniel Medina notched his first save.
DOWN THE STRETCH WE GO: West Virginia's loss on Thursday eliminated the club from title contention in the South Atlantic League's first half. The Power enter play tonight in third place, two games behind Hickory and one behind Hagerstown. The Power could still finish in a tie for first place, but with just two games remaining, could only match the Crawdads, who own the head-to-head tie breaker with two wins in three games against West Virginia. Hagerstown remains in title contention with three games left, including a doubleheader today against Lakewood.
AH GRASSHOPPER: West Virginia continues its' only 2013 series in Greensboro tonight. The Power lead the all-time set with 65 wins against 51 losses, though the Grasshoppers won the 2012 series 8-6 and have taken five of eight this year. Since 2005, West Virginia has gone 30-27 at NewBridge Bank Park.
CUMPTON GETS THE CALL: Brandon Cumpton, a 2011 SAL All-Star with the Power, is slated to make his Major League debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at PNC Park. The right-hander, a ninth round selection in 2010 out of Georgia Tech, went 7-4 with a 4.30 ERA in 2011, including a 6-0 record in May with a 1.18 earned run average, before a mid-season promotion to Bradenton. He has pitched at both Double and Triple-A this season. Cumpton will be the 32nd player to have played for the Power and gone on to play Major League Baseball.
EXTRA MEANS MORE: Friday's game was the longest game West Virginia has played this season. Friday's 12 inning contest lasted three hours and 49 minutes, 15 minutes longer than the Power's April 7 game against Asheville. Friday was also the second time the club has played a 12-inning game this year (5/23 vs. LWD). West Virginia is 3-3 in extra inning games during the 2013 season.
A RARITY OCCURRENCE: Walker Gourley went 0-6 Friday and was held without a base hit for the second straight game in this series. It marks the first time in 55 games that the All-Star has gone consecutive games without at least one base hit. Gourley has reach on at least one hit in 43 of those 55 games and has only been kept of the bases a total of ten times.
ALL-STAR POWER: West Virginia had six players selected to represent the club in the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, including three starters. Stetson Allie will play first base, Josh Bell will start in right field, and Dilson Herrera was selected as the starting shortstop. Walker Gourley was chosen as a reserve outfielder, while pitchers Orlando Castro and Tyler Glasnow were also selected to represent the Power. West Virginia, Hickory, Hagerstown, and Augusta each had six players selected by the league's managers, coaches, general managers, and media.
