Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Micah Johnson paced the Intimidators offense, finishing a double shy of the cycle, as Kannapolis won its third straight game, topping the Rome Braves, 10-8, on Saturday in front of 4,501 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Johnson finished 3-for-5, driving in a game-high three runs, and Kannapolis erupted for nine runs from the fifth through seventh innings to pull away from the Braves.
Stew Brase recorded the final two outs of the ninth inning, preserving the win and earning his third save in three opportunities. Brase walked the first batter he faced, putting the tying run on base, but bounced back to retire the next two batters, striking out Carlos Franco to end the game.
Mike Recchia earned the win in his White Sox debut, tossing 5.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking one. The Sox signed Recchia (1-0) out of the independent Frontier League earlier this week. He spent the 2012 campaign with Windy City, going 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA for the independent Thunderbolts.
Kannapolis leapfrogged the Braves in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1, Eric Grabe drew a leadoff walk, and two batters later, Kale Kiser hit safely. The pair each stole a base, putting both in scoring position with two outs for Michael Johnson. Johnson came through with a two- run base hit for a 3-2 lead.
The Intimidators then opened the flood gates with four runs in the sixth for a 7-2 lead. After Rome responded with three runs in the top of the seventh, Kannapolis returned fire with three run of its own in the home half of the inning.
Kannapolis filleted Rome reliever Robert Fish in the sixth, as Michael Marjama opened with a double, and Patrick Palmeiro doubled him home. Kale Kiser added an RBI-single, and Micah Johnson capped the offensive outburst with a two-run triple, his SAL-leading ninth. Fish got the hook one out into the seventh. Eric Grabe added a two-run double off Shae Simmons to bring the Intimidators lead to five, 10-5.
Micah Johnson deposited the first pitch of the bottom of the first over the wall in right-center field, his team-leading fifth home run of the season, for a 1-0 lead.
Rome jump ahead in the third inning on a pair of unearned runs after Eric Grabe committed a fielding error allowing Blake Brown to reach base. Jose Peraza followed with a base hit, and Levi Hyams tied the game with a single to left field. Josh Elander followed with an RBI- groundout to cash Peraza for a 2-1 lead.
Rome starter Patrick Scoggin (5-4) took the loss, giving up three runs over 5.0 innings of work.
Kannapolis secured its first home series win of the season by taking the first three games over Rome, and the Intimidators will play for a series sweep in Sunday's finale.
The Intimidators wrap up this series against the Braves on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Every Sunday is Kid's Day presented by Dentistry of the Carolinas featuring $5 kids tickets, pre-game player autographs and post-game kids run the bases.
