CHARLESTON, SC - Three Charleston RiverDogs pitchers combined to shutout the Augusta GreenJackets 3-0 Saturday night in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 5,057 fans.
The RiverDogs are now 39-28 on the season and remain in second place in the Southern Division. The GreenJackets now move to 37-31 on the season and remain in third place in the Southern Division.
Luis Niebla (3-3) started the game on the mound for Charleston and earned his third win of the season. In five innings of work, Niebla allowed no runs on three hits and recorded six strikeouts. He was relieved by Daniel Camarena who held the GreenJackets hitless in his three innings of work.
Charleston was first to score in the bottom of the third inning. After doubling down the left field line and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cito Culver, Jake Cave (2-4) scored the game's first run on a Greg Bird (3-4, 2 RBI) double to right field.
Cave doubled again in the fifth inning and gave the RiverDogs a 2-0 lead as Bird again plated Cave, this time with a single to right field.
The RiverDogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Culver walked and then went to third on another Bird double to right field. Culver later scored the third Charleston run on a wild pitch.
Alex Smith entered the game in the ninth inning and retired all three batters he faced as he picked up his fourth save of the season.
Justin Schumer (2-6) was tagged with the loss for Augusta. He pitched seven innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, and struck out five batters.
BALLPARK FUN: Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. was on hand to recognize City of Charleston employee Sharon Robinson.
COMING UP: The final game of the first half is Sunday night at 5:05 against the augusta GreenJackets. RHP Cesar Vargas (2-3, 3.61 ERA) will be on the mound for Charleston and the GreenJackets will counter with pitchers from their bullpen. It will be a Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission and Crews Subaru Kids Club Sunday presented by Y102.5. There will be free parking, members of Charlie's Kids Club will get in for free, and kids 12 and under will receive a coupon for a hot dog, Pepsi, and a bag of chips. It's also Prostate Cancer Awareness Day here at the ballpark as we take part in Ed Randall's Bat for a Cure .
