Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - One day after clinching the first half title, the Savannah Sand Gnats made quick work of the Greenville Drive in a 7-2 win Saturday night in front of 3,098 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats have won five in a row, their second-longest winning streak of 2013.
The Gnats (42-26) broke on top with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A double from CF Brandon Nimmo put runners at second and third with no outs to set up the big inning. 1B Jayce Boyd blooped a single into shallow left to bring home the first run. Later, RF Maikis De La Cruz added an RBI double and 3B Cole Frenzel an RBI single in the frame.
The Drive (22-45) picked up single runs in the second and third innings against Savannah starter Luis Cessa. However, Cessa allowed no more scoring in his seven innings of work. It was the fourth straight start of six innings or longer for Cessa who improved to 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA. Cessa struck out eight, his second-highest strikeout total of 2013.
The Gnats increased their advantage to 6-2 on Gregory Pron's two-run double in the sixth on a rally that began when Boyd singled to right field.
Boyd did all the work himself in the eighth, leading off the inning with a solo homerun his sixth of the year. In the first three games of the Gnats' series against the Drive, Boyd is 9-for-11 with three walks, a triple and two home runs.
The Gnats finish the first half against the Drive Sunday by sending RHP Gabriel Ynoa (7-2, 2.97) to the hill against LHP Cody Kukuk (3-6, 4.64). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 1 pm. The radio pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and online at Sandgnats.com begins at 1:45 pm.
