Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) will try to clinch their first home series win of the season today against the Rome Braves (A, Braves) in Game 3 of this 4-game series. Kannapolis is coming off its first consecutive home wins of the season, and is sending the recently acquired right arm of Mike Recchia to the mound. Recchia dominated the independent Frontier League in 2012 and opened the season in 2013 on the Indy circuit before the White Sox signed him this week. The Intimidators are also playing for a three-game winning streak for the first time since May 28-30. Kannapolis leads the season- series over Rome, 3-2.
Intimidating Starters: Mike Recchia, 24, makes his White Sox debut tonight in his return to the South Atlantic League. The Sox signed Recchia out of the independent Frontier League where he opened the season with Windy City. Last season he went 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA and a league-high 177 strikeouts in 150.1 innings for the Thunderbolts. He spent part of the 2011 season in the SAL with Charleston RiverDogs (A, Yankees), going 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 22 relief appearances, including a scoreless relief outing against Rome. Recchia went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois and was signed by the Yankees in 2010.
Rome's Righty: Patrick Scoggin, 22, makes his 13th start of the season and second against the Intimidators. Kannapolis tagged him for three runs over 4.0 innings and a loss on April 24. He is coming off 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a no decision against the Sand Gnats on June 9. He has earned wins in each of his last three decisions and has not taken a loss since May 7. Scoggin is holding opponents to a .231 average. The Braves signed him in 2012, and he split the season between the GCL Braves, Danville and Rome, working 14 1/3 scoreless innings in his professional debut. Scoggin pitched three season for Virginia Tech, going 7-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 36 games (15 starts).
About Last Night: Kannapolis held on to top Rome, 6-4, for a second straight home win. Zach Isler worked the final 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball for the relief win. Rome took an early 3-1 lead. Michael Johnson came through with a pair of RBI-hits to score Micah Johnson, went went 2-for-3 with a double and his league-leading eighth triple. Michael Marjama put the Intimidators ahead 4-3 with a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, a three-run frame for the Intimidators. Rome's Frank Lafreniere took the loss.
Triple Double: For the first time this season, Kannapolis tripled twice in one game. Jason Coats tripled to deep right field in the eighth inning before scoring an insurance run on a passed ball. Micah Johnson also added his league-leading eighth triple in the middle innings. The Intimidators now have 21 triples on the season, tied with the Shorebirds (A, Orioles) for the most in the Sally League.
Micah on the Move: Leadoff man Micah Johnson swiped third base on Friday, upping his Minor League-leading total to 53 stolen bases this season. He doubled before stealing third base, the 21st time he's taken third. On Thursday, he walked in the first inning and stolen second and third base, the 10th time this season he was swiped both second and third in one triple around the diamond, however for the first time in those 10 two-steal trips, he failed to cross the plate. Johnson's 59 runs scored leads the SAL and ranks third in the Minors.
Runs for the Runner: Micah Johnson scored two runs on Friday and is now tied for second in the Minors with 61 runs scored this season. He is three behind Cedar Rapids Byron Buxton (64). After Friday's 2-3 night at the plate, Johnson is now batting .327 (81-248), fifth-best in the SAL and his .415 on-base percentage ranks fourth in the SAL.
Brennan Better: With Thursday's strong outing over Rome, Brandon Brennan earned his second consecutive win and third of the season after enduring a seven-game losing streak. He gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings, just his second start this year allowing one run. After giving up a leadoff double in the first inning, Brennan held the next 23 Braves batters hitless, not surrendering a second hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning. He struck out six batters, one shy of his career high and walked two. He is still the SAL leader in losses (9), hits allowed (91), runs allowed (59) and earned runs allowed (50) as well as the new league leader in at-bats against (286) and total batters faced (314). The White Sox selected Brennan in the fourth round in June 2012.
