Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

WEDNESDAY: West Virginia allowed its first runs of the series and lost 5-4 to Lexington. Elevys Gonzalez first home run of the season staked the Power to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and West Virginia held a 3-2 lead after three innings. The Legends took the lead back in the sixth, but Jesus Brito hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh. In the eighth, Aaron Bray drove in the eventual winning run for Lexington with an infield groundout. Zach Foster took the loss, while Arcenio Leon picked up the win.

BLACK OUT: West Virginia placed Victor Black on the disabled list on Wednesday prior to the game and added left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Ramos from the Gulf Coast League Pirates roster. Black is 0-0 with a 9.64 earned run average over two starts with the Power this year. Ramos was signed as a non-drafted free agent on August 24, 2006, and has pitched in the Venezuelan Summer and Gulf Coast Leagues prior to 2010.

ZERO-ZILCH-NADA: Tuesday's shutout was the second in as many games by Power pitchers, and their fifth of the season. West Virginia pitchers had not thrown back-to-back shutouts since 2005 when they beat Lakewood 10-0 and 5-0 on June 11 and 12. Josh Wahpepah and Yovanni Gallardo received the wins in those two games during the Power's first year at Appalachian Power Park.

BANK ON IT: Maurice Bankston will enter the Power rotation tonight and make his first start of the season. The right-hander, selected in the eighth round of the 2008 draft, has made 25 starts in 42 professional appearances, including 18 in 2009. Bankston made nine starts for West Virginia last season, going 1-4 with a 4.98 earned run average. He spent the second half of the season in state College's rotation, going 2-4 with a 2.34 ERA for the Spikes.

POWER V LEGENDS: West Virginia has played Lexington more than any other team dating back to the 2005 season. The Power lead the all-time series 54-50, but trail 25-28 at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia does, however, have the edge at Applebee's Park in Lexington, winning 29 of 51 games. The 2009 series was split at six wins and six losses.
