Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads took advantage of four costly errors by the Delmarva Shorebirds to pick up their 30th win of the season, 3-1, before 2,525 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night. The 'Dads win the series, 3-1, and have won seven of their last nine games.

With the victory tonight, the Crawdads become the first team in the South Atlantic League to reach 30 wins. The Crawdads lead in the Northern Division is now at 3.5 games over both the Hagerstown Suns and Lakewood BlueClaws, whose game was suspended in the fifth inning due to inclement weather.

Hickory (30-18) got the ball rolling in the third inning against Delmarva starter RHP Luis Noel (0-2, 2.89 ERA). With two outs in the inning, CF Joe Bonadonna smacked a single to right and SS Leury Garcia followed with a standup triple to right-center to bring in Bonadonna for a 1-0 advantage.

The Shorebirds (20-28) answered back with an unearned run in the sixth against 'Dads starter LHP Robbie Ross (6-4, 2.24). 3B Tyler Kelly led off the inning with an infield single to 1B Ed Koncel who threw errantly to Ross attempting to cover first, allowing Kelly to reach second. After RF Brian Conley reached on a fielder's choice with still no outs, DH Kieron Pope hit an infield single to 2B Edwin Garcia, scoring Kelly from third to tie the game at one.

The Crawdads took advantage of very shaky fielding by the Shorebirds in the sixth. Leury Garcia started the inning by reaching on a fielding error by 1B Tyler Stampone, then advanced to second on an attempted pickoff by Noel that sailed past Stampone, moving Garcia to second. 2B Travis Adair then laid down a sacrifice bunt back to Noel, but he was again unable to guide the ball safely to first, with Garcia coming around to score and Adair moving up to second on another throwing error by 2B Gary Helmick trying to make a play at the plate. After a passed ball pushed Adair over to third, CF Miguel Velazqued singled to left to bring him home and put the 'Dads up, 3-1.

Ross allowed just the one unearned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in his seven-plus innings of work to pick up his team-leading sixth win of the year. LHP Chad Bell took over in the eighth with two men on-base and proceeded to strike out the side. RHP Trevor Hurley pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his fourth save on the season. Noel takes the loss for Delmarva.
