TONIGHT'S MATCH-UPS
RHP Austin Coley (5-1, 2.25) vs. RHP Luis Reyes (0-2, 5.04)
Coley: Surrendered one run on seven hits over 6.0 IP with 6 K and 1 BB in 5/11 W vs. CSC (5-1 Power)
Reyes: Allowed three runs on six hits over 5.0 IP with 4 K and 2 BB in 5/11 ND @ GVL (5-4 Drive)
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia defeated the Hagerstown Suns 7-6 in 12 innings on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium. The Suns took an early lead but the Power responded with runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to take a 3-1 advantage. With one swing of the bat, Dale Carey tied it up but the Power scored two in the ninth to take a 5-3 lead. Once again, the Suns responded with two in the inning to send the game into extras. In the 12th, Cole Tucker hit a single and scored two batters later when Kawika Emsley-Pai lined a double to left field. Emsley-Pai scored a batter later on a Taylor Gushue double and the Power survived a run-scoring 12th to earn their 20th win of the season.
SUNS OF ANARCHY: The Power conclude their first-half series with the Hagerstown Suns with final game of the series today at Municipal Stadium. The Power are 5-4 against the Suns this season and currently trail the all-time series 77-66. The two teams will meet again in the second half of the season with a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park from July 14-16 and one more time at Municipal Stadium from July 25-28.
OH, WE'RE HALFWAY THERE: Yesterday was the 35th game of the season and the midway point of the first half. West Virginia is currently in second place in the Northern Division standings but are 5 1/2 games back of the Hickory Crawdads. The Power will take on the Crawdads for the first time this season beginning on Monday night.
CAN'T REPLACE THIS SIMPSON: Chase Simpson is the only West Virginia player to appear in all 35 games this season. The infielder leads the team with a .296 average and 16 RBIs. Simpson is also tied for the team lead with four home runs and his .421 on base percentage is also the best on the team and the third best in the South Atlantic League
OVER THE LINE!: West Virginia committed five errors in Saturday's win over the Hagerstown Suns. It was the most errors the Power have had in a single game since they committed seven on April 13, 2013 in Asheville.
B-U-L-L-P-E-N SPELLS RELIEF: West Virginia's bullpen currently has an ERA of 2.67 whereas Power starters hold a 4.09 ERA. Last night was another successful night for the Power relievers as Dovydas Neverauskas surrendered one earned run over four innings and Sam Street tossed three innings of one-run ball.
TWO STREAKS ENDED: Pablo Reyes and Jordan Luplow's on-base streaks of 19 and 15 games, respectively, were vanquished in Saturday's victory after Reyes went 0-for-6 and Luplow went 0-for-4. Reyes' streak began in game one of the April 23 doubleheader and during those 19 games, Reyes hit .288 and had a .382 OBP. Luplow hit .245 during his 15-game streak streak and had a .405 OBP.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- MAY 23: West Virginia will host Redneck Night IV on Saturday, May 23 at 7:05 p.m. when they play the Delmarva Shorebirds. Activities for the award-winning promotion include Redneck Idol, a camo hat giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, an appearance by History Channel's Appalachian Outlaws, and a pre & postgame concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
POWER POINTS: The Power are 11-2 when scoring first this season...West Virginia is 7-8 this month after going 13-7 during the first month of the season...Chase Simpson has the longest active hit-streak for the Power at five games..The Power are 16-0 when leading after six innings in games...West Virginia took 35 games to reach 20 wins and the only team to reach 20 wins faster was the 2007 club who went 20-7 to start the season...Jeff Roy has been placed on the DL and Trace Tam Sing was promoted to Power roster on Sunday.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Gerrit Cole lost the pitching duel to Jon Lester as the Pirates fell to the Cubs 4-1... Indianapolis' Elias Diaz tallied a multi-hit game while Matt Benedict went five innings in his Triple-A debut but the Tribe lost 2-1...Max Moroff went 0-for-5 and saw his 30-game on base streak come to an end in Altoona's 2-1 loss to Akron...Luis Heredia made his Florida State League debut and surrendered five runs on three hits over 0.2 innings in Bradenton's 8-6, extra inning loss to Palm Beach.
