Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - The Greenville Drive (21-15) broke out the broomsticks on Sunday, completing a four-game sweep of the Charleston RiverDogs (19-17) with a 4-1 victory behind a three-run ninth inning and 13 strikeouts from the pitching staff.
The victory extended the Drive's winning streak to six games and gave them a two-game lead in the Southern Division standings.
With the score knotted up at one in the top of the ninth, Ben Moore got the winning rally started by singling to right field, and he moved to second on Rafael Devers' sacrifice bunt. After Javier Guerra was intentionally walked, Joseph Monge delivered an RBI infield single to put the Drive up 2-1. Deiner Lopez followed with a line drive into the left field corner to tack on two more runs.
Drive starter Michael Kopech put together an outstanding effort in a no-decision, allowing only one unearned run in five innings on four hits and two walks with a career-high seven strikeouts. Williams Jerez followed with three scoreless innings of relief and four strikeouts to improve his record to 3-1, and Michael Gunn earned his first save by punching out two Charleston hitters in the ninth.
Charleston scored their lone run off Kopech in the fourth, as Chris Breen reached on an error to begin the inning and later scored on Ryan Lindemuth's sacrifice fly.
Like Kopech, RiverDogs starter Joey Maher received a no-decision despite a fantastic outing, as he gave up just two hits and one walk in six scoreless frames with three strikeouts.
The Drive tied the game in the top of the seventh against Rony Bautista, as Moore singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and moved to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
Moore and Mike Meyers each collected a pair of hits for Greenville. Angel Aguilar was the lone Charleston batter with two hits.
The Drive begin a three-game series at Fluor Field against the Lexington Legends on Monday night at 7:05. Monday's game will be the professional debut of highly touted Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada, who signed with the Red Sox in March. RH Reed Reilly (2-1, 2.73) is scheduled to start the series opener for the Drive, and LH Colin Rodgers (1-3, 2.57) takes the ball for the Legends.
