Crawdads Best GreenJackets on Sunday Afternoon

AUGUSTA, GA: Today's Sunday afternoon game when members of the Junior 'Jackets Kids Club received free entry into Lake Olmstead Stadium, the Augusta GreenJackets (17-18) took on the Hickory Crawdads (26-9). In the final game of the weekend series, the pitching match up consisted of RHP Jose Reyes (2-1 ERA 1.54) and RHP Colin Wiles (4-1 ERA 1.08). At the end of the afternoon the Crawdads completed the series sweep of the GreenJackets with a final score of five to four.

In the top of the second inning the Crawdads pushed across the first run of the game when Josh Morgan tripled on a fly ball to right field that allowed Marcus Green Jr. to score who reached on based with a lead off walk. Crawdads third baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit an RBI single to score Josh Morgan to put the Crawdads up two to zero in the second inning.

The GreenJacket would respond to the Crawdad runs in the bottom of the third inning with a run of their own. Back-to-back singled by Randy Ortiz and Will Callaway woke up the bats for the GreenJackets. Travious Relaford drew a walk to load the bases for Jonah Arenado. Arenado smacked a line drive RBI single right back up the gut of the field to plate Randy Ortiz for the GreenJackets first run of the game. The RBI was Arenado's twenty-second of the season.

In the last two games a Hickory Crawdad player has hit a home run, this afternoon Jose Cardona made it three straight games. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Cardona hit a shot to over the left field wall to put the Crawdads up five to one.

Down five to one in the ninth inning the GreenJackets would not end the homestand without fighting till their last out. Seth Harrison who replaced Cristian Paulino, (Paulino was injured during the bottom of the sixth inning) led off with an infield single. After Jared Deacon was hit by a pitch, Randy Ortiz then reached on fielding error by Josh Morgan, the error also allowed Seth Harrison to score to cut the lead to five to two. After, a stolen base by Randy Ortiz to put himself in scoring position along with Jared Deacon on third base, manager Nestor Rojas had Aramis Garcia pinch hit for Travirous Relaford. Garcia hit a ground ball single to left field that pushed Deacon and Ortiz across home plate. The GreenJackets ninth inning rally fell one run short when Jonah Arenado hit into a five-four fielders choice to end the game.

GreenJackets starting pitcher Jose Reyes will take his first loss of the season today. Reyes pitched seven innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, but still managed to reach double digits in strikeouts with ten. The Crawdads starting pitcher Collin Wiles now improves to (4-1) on the season after pitching five innings and only allowing one run on the day against the GreenJackets.

Sunday afternoon's final line will read, four run seven hits, and zero errors for the GreenJackets and five runs, ten hits, and two errors for the Crawdads.

The Augusta GreenJackets will be hitting the road tomorrow as they take on inner state rivals the Savannah Sand Gnats for a three game series. The GreenJackets will return home Thursday night, May 21st. Thursday night will begin a seven game homestand for the GreenJackets. The GreenJackets will host the Asheville Tourists (Rockies) for a four game set and then the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) for three games. The Week long homestand will be packed with several special game day promotions along with our daily promotions. The series will also feature an early Memorial Day celebration at Lake Olmstead Stadium. All the great entertainment and fun will start next Thursday, May 21st at 7:05pm.
