Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive currently boast a talented group of young infielders, and that stable of talent is about to get even deeper, as Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada will make his professional debut Monday night at Fluor Field with first pitch set for 7:05 PM as the Drive begin a seven-game homestand.
The 19-year old Moncada garnered national attention over recent months as an impact talent with a bright future in the major leagues when he was officially introduced as a member of the Boston Red Sox organization on March 12th.
"Yoan Moncada is one of the most highly-touted prospects in recent memory, so to have him on the Greenville Drive roster is a huge thrill for our organization," said Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko. "Our fans have seen the impressive talent the Red Sox have assembled in Greenville to begin this season, and we can't wait to see him on the field as he begins his professional journey with the Drive."
Moncada is slated to spend his playing time in the field at second base, but also has experience at third base, shortstop and the outfield, while he was playing in Cuba. At the plate, he is a switch-hitter who has the potential to hit for a high average with plenty of power.
He joins a group of five infielders who entered the 2015 season with impressive accolades, all of whom were ranked in Baseball America's top 30 Red Sox prospects, and they have backed up the hype and displayed their impressive abilities at Fluor Field this year.
The talented infield includes Rafael Devers (#6 on Baseball America's Top 30, .324, two homers, 14 RBI) and Michael Chavis (#11 prospect, three homers, 14 RBI) splitting time at third base, Javier Guerra (#13 prospect, .301, three homers, 15 RBI) at shortstop, Mauricio Dubon (#23 prospect, .303, two homers, 14 RBI) playing both middle infield spots and Nick Longhi (#27 prospect, .270, two homers, 11 RBI) logging time at first base.
"Having Yoan Moncada begin his professional game action at Fluor Field is an exciting development for the Drive organization and our fans," said Drive Owner and Team President Craig Brown. "Our fans have been awaiting his arrival in Greenville all season long, and he will bring even more talent to a roster already filled with quality players and individuals."
Drive fans will not want to miss Moncada's first game action on Monday night, which kicks-off a 7-game homestand. Greenville's first opponent during the stretch is the Lexington Legends - affiliate of the Kansas City Royals - on Monday (7:05 PM), Tuesday (7:05 PM), and Wednesday (7:05 PM).
