Game Two: RHP Austin Coley (10-4, 3.92) vs. RHP Josh Walker (3-1, 3.33)
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia held a 3-1 lead against the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon before the rainfall forced the game to be suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out. The Power offense started quickly with an RBI base knock by Chase Simpson in the second to score Tito Polo. Just a few pitches later, Francisco Diaz crushed a two-run home run to put the Power up by three. Colten Brewer was stellar with seven strikeouts over four innings but will not factor into the decision because he did not go the minimum of five innings. West Virginia and Delmarva will play Sunday's game to a full nine innings while today's regularly scheduled game will go seven innings.
BATTLIN' THE 'BIRDS: The Power continue the four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds, Class-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. West Virginia is 7-2 against the Shorebirds this year after previously winning three of four at Appalachian Power Park from May 21-24 and three of four at Purdue Stadium from May 28-31. After this series, the two teams will meet again in Charleston for the final series from August 10-12.
SUCHY HONORED: This afternoon, Power right fielder Michael Suchy was honored as the South Atlantic League Player of the Week. Suchy hit .421 (8-for-19) with two home runs and 10 RBIs for the week of June 29 to July 5. It was the first time this season that any Power player has received Player of the Week honors and the first since Austin Meadows won Player of the Week awards in August of last season.
BEING SUSPENDED'S NOT SO BAD: Yesterday was the second time the Power had a game suspended. The first time was in the second game of the doubleheader on April 15 against Hagerstown and it was completed on April 28 with the Power winning 10-2.
ONE STEP CLOSER TO HISTORY: Austin Coley earned his tenth win of the season last Wednesday and became only the fourth pitcher in Power history to reach double-digit victories. Coley has matched Rudy Owens (2009) and Will Inman (2006) for the second-most wins in a single season and trails only Evan Anundsen's franchise record of 12 wins during the 2008 campaign. Anundsen accomplished the record over 28 starts.
HELLO, NEUMANN: West Virginia closer Nick Neumann worked a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday in a non-save situation. Neumann has been lights out for West Virginia out of the pen with a 1.80 ERA in 22 games. The Connecticut native has 11 saves this season and is just four shy of matching Nate Kilcrease's club record set in 2012.
MAY THE ODDS STAY IN OUR FAVOR: The Power are 8-2 in the second half of the season and have been in first place for the entire ten-game span. In the second half, West Virginia is hitting .283 as a club while the pitching staff has been stellar, owning a 2.89 ERA.
PROMO UPDATE - JULY 18: The first 1,000 fans to the ballpark on Saturday, July 18 will receive a New River Gorge Bridge Replica presented by Appalachian Power Park. Following the game, fans can enjoy postgame fireworks and all scouts who registered for scout night can sleep in the outfield of Appalachian Power Park.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia's 55 sacrifice bunts this season are the most in affiliated baseball...The Power walked 12 times on Wednesday, matching the franchise record for walks by the offense in a single game last accomplished on July 22, 2010...Cole Tucker's two hits on Saturday put his batting average at a team-best .289...The 6,833 fans from the Fourth of July was the sixth largest crowd in Appalachian Power Park history.
