Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws, after losing a 3-0 lead, scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off Hagerstown 5-3 on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Cord Sandberg's RBI groundout and Jiandido Tromp's RBI double followed a three-run top of the eighth inning and Matt Hockenberry, who gave up the three runs in the top of the inning, threw a scoreless ninth for Lakewood. The BlueClaws have now won two of the first three games on this homestand and are 6-6/39-41 while Hagerstown falls to 5-7/40-40 on the year.
Herlis Rodriguez, who entered the game 1-15, went 3-4 while Kyle Martin and Sandberg added two hits apiece for the BlueClaws in the win.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Damek Tomscha and a Herlis Rodriguez RBI single. Lakewood added a run in the third on a wild pitch that scored Kyle Martin and made it 3-0 Lakewood. After Drew Van Orden got the last out of the third inning, he settled in, retiring the last 11 hitters he faced and keeping the Suns in the game.
Lakewood starter Will Morris, meanwhile, dazzled through a career-long five scoreless innings. Calvin Rayburn threw two scoreless innings taking the lead into the eighth.
Matt Hockenberry came on and gave up a two-run double to Osvaldo Abreu and a throwing error by Emmanuel Marrero allowed the tying run to score, but Hockenberry threw a scoreless ninth. He earned the win and improved to 2-3 on the year.
The BlueClaws and Suns meet for the final time in this series on Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Tyler Viza (4-3) starts for Lakewood against LHP Matt Purke (1-3).
