THE LEADOFF: West Virginia beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-4 in the series opener on Thursday night. The Power plated three in the bottom of the first to open the scoring. Michael Suchy doubled in a pair with the bases loaded to key the inning's output. Jordan Luplow put West Virginia up 5-0 with a two-run home run in the second. The BlueClaws scored three runs off Power starter Stephen Tarpley in the third inning on five singles and added a run in the fourth to get within one. West Virginia added a run in the sixth without the beniift of a base hit and closed the scoring with a run in the seventh on a Connor Joe single. Tarpley earned his eighth win of the year and John Sever pitched the final three innings for his third save. Austin Davis was tagged for his fourth loss of the season.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: With Thursday's win, the Power have extended their division lead to four games over the second-place BlueClaws. West Virginia is 4-3 over the first seven games of the season series against Lakewood, including six games played at FirstEnergy Park. The Power will host the final seven games of the season set.
SEEING DOUBLE: Yeudy Garcia gets the call tonight for West Virginia against Lakewood's Elniery Garcia. Yuedy Garcia is a native of Sabana Yegua, Dominican Republic, and is seeking his tenth win of the season while facing the BlueClaws for the first time. Elniery Garcia is a product of Cotui Santiago, Dominican Republic, and pitched six shutout innings last Friday against West Virginia in New Jersey.
JONESING FOR RELIEF: Former Power shortstop JaCoby Jones was traded to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday for closer Joakim Soria. Jones, an end of year All-Star for West Virginia in 2014, had just been promoted to Double-A Altoona and will join the Tigers Eastern League affiliate in Erie. The shortstop hit .288 for the Power last year with 23 home runs, second most by a West Virginia player in any single season.
HOME SWEET HOME: West Virginia has more home wins and fewer home losses than any other club in the South Atlantic League this season. The Power are 34-18 at home and average 4.7 runs per game at Appalachian Power Park this season. West Virginia is 26-24 on the road and averages 4.3 runs per game on the road.
STILL GOING: Jordan Luplow and Tito Polo are each riding 16-game on-base streaks. These on-base streaks are season-bests for both players. Luplow's on-base streak began on July 12 while Polo's started prior to his participation in the Pan-Am games on June 25.
LITHUANIAN LIGHTING: Dovydas Neverauskas continues to excel as a member of the Power bullpen, having earned his second career save on Monday, one month to the day after he earned his first. The Lithuanian native has made 12 relief appearances and has a 1.24 earned run average since shifting to the bullpen. Neverauskas has also strung together 14 consecutive scoreless innings, having last allowed two runs in an inning on June 30 at Kannapolis.

POWER POINTS: Nick Neumann is three saves away from passing Nathan Kilcrease's franchise mark of 15 set during the 2012 season... Stephen Tarpley is ten innings shy of qualifying for the league's ERA race as of Friday. The southpaw would need to pitch six innings in each of his next five starts to be eligible to win the ERA crown...West Virginia hit 60 wins this season faster than any other club during the Pirates-affiliated era.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was toppled 15-5 at Minnesota... Indianapolis held off Columbus 2-1. Alen Hanson's two run homer in the third was all the offense the Indians would need.... Altoona was doubled up 4-2 by Akron with Jason Creasy taking his fifth loss of the year... Bradenton was idle on Thursday... The Black Bears dropped their second straight to Tri-City, losing 5-4 after allowing four in the third.
