Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, W.V. - July 31, 2015) - The West Virginia Power downed the Lakewood BlueClaws 9-2 on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Power pitching took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Power mashed a season-best 18 hits en route to the club's fourth consecutive win.
Yeudy Garcia (10-5) earned the victory after the right hander slung five hitless innings and surrendered one walk with five strikeouts. In relief of him was Julio Vivas who worked a perfect fifth but surrendered a leadoff single to Cord Sandberg which broke up the no-hit bid.
The Power offense started in the first inning when Tito Polo scored on an RBI sac fly from Jerrick Suiter. However, the offense faltered early by stranding eight runners on base through the first three innings.
Connor Joe hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to give the Power a 2-0 lead. The long ball from the Pirates' first round pick was his first career home run.
West Virginia added two more runs in the fifth inning on RBIs from Taylor Gushue and Tyler Filliben and had their biggest run output in the sixth inning. Four runs came across including a wild pitch and an error which allowed Suiter and Pablo Reyes to score. Filliben pulled a run scoring double to plate Escobar but was thrown out at third attempting to stretch the double into a triple. Polo hit a two-out double and crossed home on a two-bagger by Jordan Luplow which gave the Power an 8-2 lead.
In the eighth inning the Power tallied two more hits to set a new-season high with 18 including back-to-back singles from Filliben and a returning Erik Forgione. Filliben scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Luplow.
Elniery Garcia (6-8) took the loss despite allowing just one run over three innings.
