Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In fitting fashion, a standout defensive night for the Greenville Drive ended with a standout defensive play, as Bryan Hudson's game-saving catch in center field allowed the Drive to come away with a 4-2 win over the Lexington Legends on Friday night at Fluor Field.
The Legends (14-17, 45-56) placed two runners on base with one out in the ninth thanks to singles from Brandon Downes and Chase Vallot. After Kuehl McEachern recorded the second out of the inning, danger seemed imminent when Luis Valenzuela smacked a deep fly ball to center. Hudson had other ideas, sprinting towards the deepest part of the ballpark to make a sensational diving catch to preserve the Drive (15-16, 53-51) victory.
Dedgar Jimenez (6-7) put together a terrific start to earn his first win since June 20th, allowing only two runs, both solo homers, in six and two-third innings. McEachern kept the Legends off the board for the final two and one-third innings to record his team-leading eighth save. Both pitchers benefitted from terrific defense, as the Drive infield turned four double plays on the night in addition to Hudson's heroic play.
The Drive took a 2-0 lead in the third against Lexington starter Scott Blewett (2-4). Hudson drew a leadoff walk and stole second, moved to third on a J.T. Watkins single and came home on Joseph Monge's double to center. Michael Chavis added an RBI groundout in the inning.
Lexington plated their first run in the fourth when Wander Franco smacked a solo homer over the Green Monster to cut the Drive lead to 2-1.
Two more runs for the Drive in the sixth off new pitcher Matt Tenuta proved to be crucial. Javier Guerra smacked a one-out double to center, and Mike Meyers followed with an RBI single to right. After Meyers stole second, Watkins drove him in with a single to left.
Downes was responsible for Lexington's second run of the night when he cracked a solo homer off Jimenez in the seventh. He went 3-4 to lead the way for the Legends.
Guerra and Watkins had two hits apiece for Greenville.
With the series tied up at one, the teams will meet again at Fluor Field on Saturday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. LH Jalen Beeks (8-4, 4.19) takes the ball for the Drive, and the Legends will start LH Foster Griffin (0-4, 7.14).
