BELOIT, WI - John Wooten homered, drove in two and scored twice for the Beloit Snappers, who downed the Clinton LumberKings, 7-4, in Midwest League action with a crowd of 2,106 in attendance at Pohlman Field on Saturday night.

Beloit starts the series with a victory to up their record to 72-59 (29-32 in the second half). Clinton's third straight loss knocks them down to 64-66 (31-30 in the second half).

The Snappers got on the board in the first thanks to some shoddy LumberKings defense. A single and two walks loaded the bases and Wooten banged into an RBI fielder's choice. An error on the play allowed a second run to come across, putting Beloit ahead early.

In the second, it was Clinton that loaded the bases, using two hits and a base on balls to put starting pitcher Derek DeYoung (7-5) in a tight spot. With two outs, Janelfy Zorilla dropped a two-run single into center to tie the game.

After three scoreless innings, the LumberKings moved ahead in the sixth on a single, a double and an error, but the Snappers quickly answered. Wooten started things by immediately tying the game with 19th homer of the season. Matt Olson then singled and an error three batters later put two runners on. That brought up Ryan Mathews, who belted a double to the wall in center that scored both men, putting Beloit ahead for good.

Insurance for the Snappers came in the form of single runs in the seventh and eighth. A double by Olson scored the run in the seventh and Daniel Robertson beat out an infield single in the eighth to tally the other run.

While the Snappers were adding to their lead, reliever Chris Lamb was making it stand up. Lamb fired two innings of shutout baseball, only allowing one hit and striking out two. In the ninth, Clinton did score an unearned off new pitcher Vince Voiro, but that would be all they would get, as Voiro sealed the deal with a strikeout and a groundout.

On Sunday afternoon, these two teams will go at it in game two of this series. Beloit's RHP Dylan Covey (0-1, 4.23 ERA) will toe the slab against LHP Steven Ewing (1-0, 5.40 ERA).
