Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs didn't score for the second straight game and their scoreless streak is now at 24 2/3 innings following a 1-0 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 28-33 in the second half and 66-62 overall on the season. With nine games left, the Chiefs are three games behind the Clinton LumberKings in the Wild Card race.

The Chiefs put two on base in the top of the third against Josue Montanez but came away empty. Ildemaro Vargas singled with one out and was out at second base on a fielders' choice by Gerwuins Velazco. C.J. McElroy Jr. reached on an error but Breyvic Valera grounded out to end the inning.

Cedar Rapids took advantage immediately as Michael Quesada lifted the first pitch from Kyle Helisek to deep left field. Jordan Walton got to the wall and leapt but it was just out of his reach for a solo homer. The blast, Quesada's second of the season, put the Kernels up 1-0 and would ultimately be the only run of the game.

The Chiefs put two on base in the sixth inning as Valera singled to left-center with two outs and Trevor Martin followed with a single to left. The game stayed 1-0 as Montanez got Jeremy Schaffer on a fielders' choice to third base to end the inning.

Peoria's best chance to break through came in the seventh as Cedar Rapids used three different pitchers. Juan Herrera walked with one out and Brandon Bixler replaced Montanez. Nick Martini singled to right and Vargas drew a walk to load the bases. Bixler struck out Velazco for the second out before Madison Boer took over on the hill. With the bases still loaded, McElroy grounded into a 6-4 fielders' choice to end the inning with three left on base.

In the last gasp of the game, Martini walked with two outs in the ninth for the Chiefs' seventh base runner of the night. However, Boer earned his seventh save of the season as Vargas grounded out.

Helisek (7-6) took the loss despite allowing just one run on three hits over seven innings. The lefty struck out seven and walked two with one home run allowed. Thomas Lee threw a hitless and scoreless eighth inning in relief.
