South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Left fielder Devin Shines launched a two-run homer in the third and shortstop Brandon Trinkwon added a three-run bomb of his own in the sixth to lead the Great Lakes Loons to a 9-4 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday night. The Hawks took their seventh consecutive loss in the game and the Loons picked up their fourth straight win.

Great Lakes (63-68, 36-25) got off to a flying start with two quick runs in the top of the first inning to take the lead. Center fielder Robbie Garvey walked to lead off against South Bend starting pitcher Blake Perry (7-7). With one out, Garvey stole second base and came around to score on an RBI single by designated hitter Aaron Miller that gave the Loons a 1-0 lead. Miller moved up to second base on a wild pitch and he scored when Shines flared a single into left. Perry got second baseman Kevin Taylor to hit into a forceout to the shortstop to end the inning at 2-0 Loons.

South Bend (77-54, 33-29) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Brandon Drury led off the inning with a line drive single to right field against Loons starter Tom Windle (5-0). Designated hitter Roidany Aguila singled to right with one out to put runners at first and second. Catcher Michael Perez came through for the Hawks with a two-out RBI single on a ground ball to right that scored Drury and advanced Aguila to third. Shortstop Andrew Velazquez came to the plate next and he hit a slow chopper just past the mound that resulted in a game-tying infield single. Aguila crossed the plate and the game was tied at 2-2.

The Loons, the Class-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, wasted no time in jumping back in front of the Hawks as they took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the third inning. For the second time in three innings, Garvey led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, right fielder Jeremy Rathjen, hit a long double to center field that scored Garvey from first and gave the Loons a 3-2 lead. Miller extended the lead to 4-2 with a line drive single to center field. Rathjen scored and Miler advanced to second base on the throw home. After Perry retired first baseman Tyler Ogle for the first out, Shines pummeled an 0-1 offering over the left field seats for a two-run homer and a 6-2 lead.

The Hawks, the Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, did not mount any sort of a threat until the bottom of the fifth inning. Second baseman Fidel Pena led off the inning with a single to center. Center fielder Breland Almadova followed Pena with a single to center to put runners at first and second. Right fielder Socrates Brito also singled to center field to load the bases with nobody out and brought the tying run to the plate in Drury. Starter Tom Windle settled down after a visit to the mound from the Great Lakes pitching coach and struck out Drury. He then retired first baseman Rudy Flores on a sacrifice fly to right field that cut the Hawks deficit to 6-3. Aguila grounded out to short to end the inning with the score 6-3 in favor of the Loons.

Perry's night came to an end after just four innings in a disappointing outing for the sixth-round pick from Danville, KY. He allowed five hits, three walks, and six earned runs on the night. Tyler Green came in to replace Perry to start the fifth. He pitched a perfect fifth inning before running into trouble in the top of the sixth. Taylor led off the sixth with a ground ball single up the middle. He advanced to second on a groundout to third by Loons third baseman Leo Rodriguez. Catcher Jose Capellan took a close 3-2 pitch for ball four to put runners on first and second with one out. The bottom of the order then displayed some power as shortstop and number nine hitter Brandon Trinkwon hit a towering three-run homerun to right-center field on a 1-0 pitch from Green that gave the Loons an insurmountable 9-3 lead.

Windle's night was done after five innings for the Loons. He allowed nine hits and three runs while striking out five in a winning effort. Thomas Taylor entered the game to start the sixth inning. The Hawks' offense managed three doubles and four hits in Taylor's three innings of work but left all four runners stranded as Taylor pitched his way in and out of jams.

Tyler Green gave way for Kyle Winkler to start the seventh inning. He pitched two scoreless innings to try to keep the Hawks in the game. He was followed in the top of the ninth inning by Enrique Burgos. Burgos allowed the first two batters he faced to reach and had runners at second and third with nobody out as Velazquez's throw on the second batter got past the first baseman. He escaped the inning without giving up any runs by striking out Miller and Ogle and inducing Shines to ground out to second base.

Luis Meza came in to start the ninth for the Loons. Almadova tried to get a rally started by lining a triple down the right field line into the corner. Brito followed by beating out an infield single to short that scored Almadova and cut the lead to 9-4. The Hawks were threatening with the heart of the order coming to the plate but Meza short-circuited the rally by getting Drury and Flores to hit into force outs at second and retiring Aguila on a soft line drive to the shortstop to end the game.

The Hawks and Loons continue their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. It is Family Day at Coveleski Regional Stadium so enjoy the day at the Cove with pre-game catch on the field and a post-game autograph session with the Silver Hawks' players. The Hawks are also giving away a Silver Hawks poster to the first 500 fans through the gates so come to the stadium early to make sure to get a poster to get signed after the game.
