Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Daniel Klein's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning broke up a no-hitter, but the Lansing Lugnuts (24-38, 56-75) still fell to the Dayton Dragons (34-28, 35-37), 6-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Cooley Law School Stadium on Saturday night.
Lansing, which had been no-hit three times already this season, was hitless entering the eighth inning before Klein blasted a leadoff bomb on to the grass berm in left-center field against Dayton reliever Wandy Peralta.
It was the Kansas State product's third home run in 15 games with the Lugnuts
Dragons' starter Ismael Guillon (Win, 6-8), who came in with a 16.30 ERA against Lansing in four prior outings this season, got Dayton to that point by pitching six scoreless, hitless innings before Peralta took over in the seventh. The 21-year old struck out three and also walked three in earning the win.
Peralta gave up the only hit of the game to the Lugs over two innings of work, and Werleen Taveras completed the one-hitter with a hitless ninth inning.
All of Dayton's runs came against Lansing starter Ben White (Loss, 8-8). Daniel Pigott contributed with two two-run doubles in the contest - one in the first and one in the sixth - and drove in four runs on the night.
Tanner Rahier's sac fly added a run in the second; Jeff Gelalich capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single, chasing White from the game.
In total, White lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs - all earned - on seven hits. The 24-year old struck out five and issued just one walk.
In the loss, Emilio Guerrero had a hitless night at the plate but did reach via a trio of walks. Dalton Pompey and Christian Lopes each also drew a free pass.
The middle-game of the series is on a Sunday Superhero Kid's Day at Cooley Law School Stadium. With first pitch set for 2:05 p.m., Lansing will hand the ball to southpaw Daniel Norris (1-7, 4.30) to take on Dayton right-hander Nick Travieso (7-4, 5.22).
