
Woodchucks Glide Past Eau Claire Express

WAUSAU- After Thursday nights exciting victory against the Express, the Wisconsin Woodchucks looked to continue their two game win streak Friday night with the second game of the three game series. Friday night's game was a high scoring offensive clinic with both teams putting up a combined score of 19 points. However, the Woodchucks got the best with the bats and glided past Eau Claire 12-7.
The Woodchucks knocked in the first run when center fielder Brooks Braga singled to left field scoring Mike Bernal from second base. The "ËChucks had another opportunity to increase their lead in the third inning, but left two on when Eric Filia- Snyder grounded out to end the inning.
Beginning in the fourth, Eau Claire's own Casey Gillaspie crushed Alex Vetter's fastball to deep right field to tie the game at one. Just two batters later, Ty Forney repeated with another monster home run to left field to take the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
The Woodchucks would answer right back with a fielder's choice and two consecutive singles to bring in Madison Carter for the tying run. The Woodchucks, would tack in another run to reestablish the lead 3-2 when a passed ball got by Nick Bullington to score Mike Bernal.
Brooks Braga would single putting runners on the corners, and Brad McKewon would add to the score by doubling to left-center field to score Jake Peter.
One batter later, with still no outs in the fourth inning, J.D. Davis would reach with a two RBI single to clear the bases and give the "ËChucks a 6-2 lead. The Woodchucks after all was said and done would come away with five runs, off of six hits entering the fifth inning on Friday evening.
Eau Claire would have a comeback of their own however. Josh Scheffert would start things off with an RBI single to cut the Woodchucks lead to three. One batter later, red-hot first basemen Casey Gillaspie hammered a two run bomb to left field, his second homerun of the night. The lead would be cut down to one for the Woodchucks in the bottom of the fifth.
Once again the Woodchucks answered to throw a few insurance runs on the board with J.D. Davis at the plate. With bases loaded and no one out for the second consecutive inning, the Woodchucks would score off of a J.D. Davis RBI single to score Jake Peter.
Later that inning, Brooks Braga would score from third on a passed ball to make it a 9-5 game.
Skyler Ewing would swing away on a full count and slap a double into the gap to score two more Woodchucks making it a 11-5 game, and that would do it for the fifth inning. The Woodchucks for the second time tacked five more runs on to pull away from the Express.
The "ËChucks just couldn't keep the bat off the ball, with another run coming in the sixth inning when Mike Bernal slammed a solo home run to go up by a intimidating seven runs.
Alex Real for the Eau Claire Express knocked out a solo home run in the eighth inning, but still trailed by six runs with only an inning left in regulation.
Woodchucks relief, Jordan Jess would shut down the side for the Wisconsin Woodchucks to earn another win 12-7 and proceed on their three game winning streak.
The Woodchucks will be in action again Saturday in Eau Claire to finish up the three game series, and start their second series against Lakeshore on Sunday.
