Cats knock off Beetles
June 29, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release
After a pair of walk off wins in the first two games of their series with Thunder Bay, the Alexandria Beetles were without magic in the finale. An early 5-2 lead quickly turned into a large deficit as the Border Cats (13-17) knocked off the Beetles (11-19) 17-7 at Knute Nelson.
Mitchell Babb took the loss as Alexandria used four pitchers, including two position players, while Dan Ludwig earned the victory despite allowing seven runs, five earned, and 13 hits in 5.1 innings.
Thunder Bay scored a solo run in the top of the first only to watch Alexandria take the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI grounder by Jimmy Pickens and single from Matt Beaty.
After the Border Cats scored one in the top of the third to tie but the Beetles jumped right back in the bottom of the third. Ben Moore doubled with one out and after Pickens singled him to third, Beaty and Ryan Padilla each delivered RBI hits.
But the lead would not last long as Thunder Bay cut the deficit to one with two in the top of the fourth and then exploded for a seven-run fifth as the Beetle staff lost the strike zone. Eleven Border Cats came to the plate, aided by four walks and a hit by pitch, with the big hit a bases clearing double by Danny Bethea to chase Babb.
Three more walks led to two Border Cat runs in the sixth and three more walks and a hit batter plated four Thunder Bay runs in the seventh off Josh Guerra, Alexandria's starting designated hitter, making his first pitching appearance.
Though Alexandria scored single runs in the fifth and the sixth, they never threatened the result after losing the lead.
The teams combined for 24 runs and 27 hits, drew a combined 20 walks, and sent 102 men to the plate.
Padilla and Beaty each had three hits for Alexandria and drove in two runs.
The Beetles visit Willmar on Saturday with a 7:05 CDT start time.
