Rox Walk off against Honkers

ST CLOUD - The St. Cloud Rox defeated the Rochester Honkers 6-5 on a walk off wild pitch Thursday night before a raucous crowd of 1,747 fans at Joe Faber Field. The Rox are now 7-20 on the season with eight games left to play in the first half of the Northwoods League season.

Deuces Wild! Dueling Pianos, presented by PreferredOne, had the crowd singing and cheering from the first pitch to the winning run and created a truly memorable atmosphere.

The Honkers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half, but the Rox responded with five runs in their half of the second inning. Nick Rau (Georgia Southern), Tony Skjefte (Minnesota), and Chris Paul (California) each had RBI singles, Phil Imholte (St Cloud State) hit an RBI double and Mark Rhine (Wake Forest) had an RBI groundout.

The Honkers got a solo home run in the seventh inning to cut the Rox lead to 5-4, then tied the game in the eighth inning to set the stage for dramatics in the bottom of the ninth.

With one out, Imholte hit his second double of the night down the left field line. With Rhine at the plate and a 1-2 count Imholte advanced to third on a Dylan Nelson (San Mateo) wild pitch.

Nelson's next pitch was wild as well and Imholte was able to score from third base with the winning run, sending the big crowd home happy.

Alex Roberts (Newberry) earned the win after turning in two innings in relief of Zach Hirsch (Nebraska). Nelson took the loss for the Honkers.

The Rox finish their series with Rochester Friday night. Fans are invited to stick around after the game for the always popular Fireworks Friday, presented by CarCo. The fireworks will begin immediately after the game. For tickets visit www.stcloudrox.com.
