Wausau Woodchucks News Release
Starting pitcher Robby Medel fired six strong innings and was aided from great defensive play and an efficient offense as the Woodchucks defeated the Green Bay Bullfrogs, 6-2, Wednesday night at Joannes Stadium.
Medel pitched into the seventh inning for the Woodchucks (14-7), who won their eleventh game in their last twelve tries, remaining atop the Northwoods league South division standings.
Green Bay (10-13) struck first in the ballgame, scoring a run in the first on left fielder Ryan Koziol's sacrifice fly. However, Wisconsin would score the next four runs of the game.
The Chucks tied the game at 1-1 when center fielder Tyler Stieb singled home shortstop C.J. Chatham, who doubled leading off the third inning.
First baseman Brendon Hayden led off the Chucks' half of the fourth with a walk, and was promptly sent to third on a single to right from right fielder Nick Banks. With runners at the corners, left fielder Jake Jeffries sent a deep sac fly to right, giving the Woodchucks a 2-1 advantage. Chatham's second double of the day resulted in another run as Wisconsin took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning.
With two outs and no one on in the sixth inning, designated hitter Jake Scudder blasted his first homerun of the year, giving the Chucks a 4-1 led.
Green Bay tallied a single run in the seventh, as did the Chucks in both the eighth and ninth innings, courtesy of a Scudder RBI-double and a sacrifice fly from second baseman Nate Mondou. That gave the Chucks a 6-2 lead, a lead that closer Max Ising would hold on to.
Medel, who benefited from three slick defensive plays at third from Paul DeJong throughout his outing, improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the loss went to Bullfrogs' right-hander Ethan Rosebeck, who fell to 1-2.
The Woodchucks are back in action Thursday in the finale of this home-and-home series with the Bullfrogs. First pitch from Athletic Park is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
