Frederick Keys News Release

KINSTON, NC - The Down East Wood Ducks (76-35/26-15) used a pair of home runs to defeat the Frederick Keys (44-65/15-25) 7-4 on Friday night at Grainger Stadium. With the setback, the Keys saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

Delayed 46 minutes on account of rain, Down East grabbed a 4-0 lead against Ofelky Peralta in the second. Yohel Pozo singled, while back-to-back walks by Peralta (0-2) loaded the bases for Bubba Thompson. Attacking on the first pitch, he hit a grand slam to right.

Walks fueled the second blast by Down East in the fourth. After Sherten Apostel and Josh Altmann drew consecutive free passes, Thompson bunted both runners into scoring position. Peralta then struck out Sam Huff, but Diosbel Arias cranked a three-run homer. Overall, Keys pitching walked seven batters, while Apostel and Altmann drew six of those free passes.

Wood Ducks starter Tim Brennan retired the first 11 batters he faced and did not allow a run through four innings, but the Keys scored four times before the right-hander exited. Singles by Patrick Dorrian and J.C. Escarra put men at the corners, while a Sean Miller double play ball scored Dorrian.

Trailing by six, the Keys made it a three-run game in the sixth. Three singles including an RBI base knock by Brett Cumberland brought in the first run, while a Dorrian sac-fly made it 7-3. One batter later, Escarra singled to right. Cumberland advanced to third and then scored after Yanio Perez misplayed the ball in right.

Zach Matson and Tim Naughton collaborated on four hitless innings of relief to keep the game close, but Jefferson Medina and Joe Kuzia closed the game out to hand Down East a 7-4 win.

Brennan (4-0) earned his fourth straight Carolina League victory, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Peralta allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings with four walks in the loss and Kuzia pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout to tally his 17th save.

The Keys and Wood Ducks continue their series on Saturday at Grainger Stadium. Right-hander Brenan Hanifee (8-9, 4.46) starts for Frederick and will be opposed by Down East right-hander Alex Eubanks. First pitch is at 6 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn app.
