Down East Wood Ducks News Release

KINSTON, NC - Down East (30-23) could not convert a season-high eight walks into runs in a 4-2 defeat to Buies Creek (30-23) on Thursday night. Every Wood Duck hitter reached base in the loss and Anderson Tejeda connected on his ninth homer of the season.

His homer gave the Wood Ducks the lead in the third - a two-run blast to center. He also extended his league lead in RBIs to 43 which also puts him in a tie for ninth for the most in Minor League Baseball. Thursday was only the fifth time in 27 games the Wood Ducks scored first and lost.

Starter Christian Torres battled into the fifth inning without a clean inning to that point. A rally formed with one out in the inning as four of the top five batters in the order reached base, producing three runs to give the Astros the lead.

Cole Wiper left two inherited runners stranded in the fifth and would go on to toss two more scoreless innings to lower his May ERA to 1.29.

He gave way for Anthony Gose in the eighth, who allowed one run in the inning. However he induced an inning-ending bases loaded double play to prevent further damage. Jacob Shortslef added a strikeout in a scoreless ninth to keep the Woodies only down two.

The Wood Ducks could not get "the" hit all evening, finishing 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. In all, they left 12 runners on base. Meanwhile, the Astros only collected singles for all 14 hits of their victory. It is the second time this season the Astros have reached double digits in hits without an extra-base hit against the Woodies.

Down East moves into a tie for first place with the Astros with 17 games remaining in the half. This series was only the third series loss for the Woodies in the last nine sets as they finish May with a club record 18 wins.

The DEWDs play the next six games on the road starting with three in Myrtle Beach (24-29). A pair of right-handers will duel on Friday with Walker Weickel (1-3, 4.35) facing Matt Swarmer (4-2, 2.38) at 7:00 p.m. at TicketReturn.Com Field.
