'Wolves Win Thriller

The SeaWolves won their third straight game on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park with a 5-4 win in a thriller over the Altoona Curve.

The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Freddy Guzman reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Guzman, who stole three bases on the afternoon, scored on a Wilkin Ramirez base hit for a 1-0 lead.

Altoona tied the game against Erie starter Ben Fritz in the top of the fourth inning when Melvin Dorta homered for the second time in the series.

The Howlers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Will Rhymes reached on an error, Guzman singled and Danny Worth reached on a sacrifice bunt-fielder's choice to load the bases for Ramirez. Ramirez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but Rhymes scored, giving the ‘Wovles a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Curve would go ahead. James Boone and Dorta both singled to put a pair on for Jonel Pacheco who connected on the third straight base hit to bring Boone home, tying the game 2-2. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by Anthony Webster brought home Pacheco to give Altoona a 3-2 lead.

The ‘Wolves struck right back in the bottom of the sixth. Max Leon, who earlier in the game extended his hitting streak to five straight games, drew a leadoff walk. Leon stole second and moved to third on a Max St. Pierre single. Deik Scram hit into a fielder's choice that scored Leon, tying the game once again at 3-3. Scram was caught stealing for the second out with Ryan Roberson at the plate. With the bases clear, Roberson clubbed his fourth home run of the season to put Erie ahead 4-3. Three of Roberson's four home runs have come against Altoona.

Altoona would tie the game for the fourth time in the top of the seventh when Pacheco doubled home Victor Alvarez.

Erie would go ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh when, with one out, Ramirez hit a laser shot over the wall in right field for his fourth home run of the season.

Casey Fien (1-1) picked up the win for Erie in relief and Freddy Dolsi tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first save.

The SeaWolves are now three games over .500 at 13-10 and they improved their home record to 5-5. Erie also stole a season-high six bases in the game.

The team is off on Monday and travels to Akron to begin a three game series on Tuesday night.
