Whitney's Walk-off...The Aeros escaped Canal Park with a much needed victory yesterday afternoon, as DH Matt Whitney sliced a double into the right field corner to score Michael Aubrey with the winning run as Akron snuck past Harrisburg 2-1 in 10 innings. Harrisburg reliever (and former Aeros hurler) Jim Ed Warden retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn't handle Aubrey's comebacker as he reached first on an infield single. Whitney then sent Warden's next pitch down the right field line, and Aubrey was able to chug home despite an excellent relay throw from Harrisburg's William Bergolla and the vociferous objections of basically the entire Senators team after a bang-bang play at the plate. The double capped a nice afternoon for Whitney, as he finished 2-5 for his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the season (all nine have been two-hit games).
The Times, They are A-Changin'...After being battered for 27 runs and 27 hits in the first two games of this series Akron pitching finally figured out the Harrisburg offense, holding the Senators to just a run on four singles yesterday. LHP David Huff was outstanding in a no-decision, allowing just two hits and an unearned run while recording five strikeouts before departing after five innings. The bullpen then turned one of its best performances of the young season, as right-handers T.J. Burton, Jeff Stevens and Randy Newsom combined for five shutout innings of two-hit baseball. All three pitchers were working for the second straight game, and Burton and Stevens, tossed two innings apiece and recorded four strikeouts between them. Newsom earned the win with a scoreless frame in the top of the 10th. Yesterday marked the first time the Aeros had held Harrisburg to less than eight runs in a game this year; the Senators had scored 54 runs in the first five games between the clubs. The four hits allowed by Akron pitching also tied a season-low.
Welcome to the Show...You can add another name to the list of former Aeros who have made the big leagues, as outfielder Brad Snyder was promoted to Cleveland from Class AAA Buffalo earlier today. Snyder spent a year-and-a-half with Akron in 2005 and 2006, and hit .273 in 210 games in his Aeros career. He also set a franchise record with 158 strikeouts in 2006. The former first-round pick (18th overall) in 2003 out of Ball State University was hitting .236 for the Bisons, with five doubles, a triple, four homers and 10 RBI in 20 games. To make room for the Bellevue native LHP Jeremy Sowers was optioned back to Buffalo. Sowers made a spot start against the New York Yankees yesterday and allowed three runs (one earned) in 5.1 innings in a no-decision.
