Road Strugglies Continue For Defenders

April 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

READING, PA- It's been awhile since the Defenders have won a game on the road, April 12 to be exact. Since then, Connecticut is 0-7 away from Dodd as they lost convincingly on Sunday to Reading, 9-4.

Dave McKae was roughed up Sunday afternoon as the Phillies knocked around the righty who was brilliant in his previous outing against Bowie, a game where he sat down 17 consecutive. McKae's final line wasn't pretty as he lasted just three and a third innings, gave up seven earned runs on 11 base hits and struck out just one.

Through six innings, the R-Phils had a commanding 7-0 advantage but the Defenders would not be shut down completely. In the top of the seventh Carlos Sosa ripped a triple off the wall and Adam Witter tapped an RBI groundout to score Sosa from the third to make it 7-1.

Connecticut would get three more in the eighth as Witter laced a bases clearing double into the gap to close the lead to 7-4.

Meanwhile, Steve Palazzolo was dealing on the mound in relief. Palazzolo went three and two thirds innings, allowing no runs, scattered two hits, walked none and struck out three to keep the Phils at bay.

But Sergio Romo would come in to pitch the home half of the eighth and Romo struggled for the first time in 2008. He hit the first two batter he saw and gave up a bases loaded single to Jason Donald to score two runs as the lead was extended to 9-4.

The Defenders could get nothing in the final frame as they lost the final game of the series to Reading 9-4 en route to the three-game sweep.

Connecticut will take Monday off before heading back to Dodd to face off against the Trenton Thunder on Tuesday at 6:35pm. Tickets are available for the three-game set at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
