Erie SeaWolves News Release
The Erie SeaWolves needed an extra frame on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park as they took down the Reading Phillies 6-5 taking two of the first three games of the series from the R-Phils.
The SeaWolves threw the opening punch in the first inning as Jaime Johnson led off with a walk, advanced to third on a Brandon Douglas single and came into score on a sacrifice fly from Rawley Bishop for a 1-0 lead.
The Howlers added onto their lead in the second inning as Bryan Holaday led off with a single and advanced to second on Audy Ciriaco base knock. Holaday came in to score as Michael Rockett, in his Double-A debut, delivered with an RBI single to right, extending Erie's lead to 2-0.
The Phillies answered in the third inning against Erie starter Jacob Turner as Michael Spidale hit a solo home run into left field, making the score 2-1.
Erie struck back in the fourth inning, extending its lead back to two as Ciriaco hit a solo home run to left for a 3-1 lead.
The lead held until the top of the seventh when Reading would tie the game. Reading loaded the bases with consecutive singles by Cody Overbeck and Stephen Susdorf and a walk by Carlos Rivero. Derrick Mitchell singled home Overbeck making it a 3-2 game and with two outs, Spidale singled home Susdorf tying the game.
The SeaWolves struck right back in the bottom of the seventh seventh. Jaime Johnson led off with a single and advanced on a Brandon Douglas sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Reading intentionally walked Rawley Bishop setting up Michael Bertram facing a lefty. Bertram came through with a two-run double making it 5-3 Erie.
Reading would yet again tie the game in the top of the ninth against reliever Chance Ruffin. With one out, Mitchell walked and Tuffy Gosewisch singled putting two on for Tim Kennelly. Kennelly hit into a fielder's choice and Erie retired Gosewisch at second. Spidale and Niuman Romero each singled to bring home the games tying runs.
The 'Wolves stranded the winning run in the ninth and the game went to extras.
After Rob Waite worked a 1-2-3 top of the 10th, the 'Wolves would end the game promptly in the bottom half. Bryan Holaday led off and singled. The 'Wolves pinch ran with Shawn Roof. Ciriaco laid down a sacrifice bunt and that was fielded by the third baseman Overbeck. An errant throw towards second allowed both Roof and Ciriaco to reach safely, giving Erie the winning run on third. Adam Calderone followed and took the first pitch he saw into left, scoring the games winning run.
Waite (2-1) got the win for the SeaWolves, going 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
Turner got the no-decision allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The SeaWolves will go for the series win on Monday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.1:05 First Pitch. Righty Luke Putkonen (0-6, 8.26 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Ryan Edell (3-1, 4.05 ERA).
