Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Jared Hughes turned in another quality start for the Altoona Curve on Sunday night but the offense struggled against the B-Mets pitching staff in a, 4-1, loss at NYSEG Stadium. Hughes (3-2) hurled six innings and allowed three runs on three hits and did not allow a baserunner in his last three innings of work.
The B-Mets got out to an early lead in the first off Hughes when Brahiam Maldonado hit a two-run homer with two away. They added another run in the second when Jordany Valdespin doubled in Salomon Manriquez to make it, 3-0. It would be the last run of the game that Hughes would allow as he settled down in the third. He retired the last 10 men he faced in the game before departing after six.
Altoona wouldn't stay off the scoreboard for long as they loaded up the bases against Binghamton starter Brandon Moore (4-3) in the fourth with one down. Miles Durham struck out with the bases loaded but Brad Chalk was issued a four-pitch walk by the starter Moore and Jordy Mercer trotted home from third to put the Curve on the scoreboard. Hughes tired to help his own cause by lining a shot to center that was snared out of the air by centerfielder Raul Reyes to end the inning and the threat.
That was the only run the Curve would push across on Sunday night as they went a combined 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position while stranding eight runners. They threatened in the fifth when Starling Marte singled and moved to third on a throwing error with one away. Moore settled down and struck out Quincy Latimore and induced a groundout off the bat of Mercer to end the threat.
In the ninth, Kris Watts drove a ball to right with Durham on at first but Reyes once again made a nice catch to keep the Curve off the board and end the game.
Marte finished the game 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to eight games in the loss.
Altoona (25-24) and Binghamton (15-31) will wrap up the four-game series on Memorial Day with a 1:05 p.m. matinee contest from NYSEG Stadium. RHP Mike Colla (3-1, 2.54), who has flourished in a starting role with the Curve this year, will take to the hill in the finale for Altoona. Binghamton has yet to announce a starter for the series finale after LHP Mark Cohoon was promoted to Triple-A on Sunday.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 12:35 p.m.
