Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves opened up a four-game series against the Akron Aeros on Monday night and did not disappoint 6,193 fans as the Howlers won their eighth straight over Akron by a final of 6-2.
Akron's starter Josh Tomlin, who was 0-3 against the SeaWolves entering the game, held Erie hitless for the first three innings of the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Deik Scrak led off and connected on his 13th home run of the season over the wall in right for a 1-0 Erie lead. The home run tied Scram's career-high set in 2008. Cale Iorg followed up the home run with a single to left, bringing Brennan Boesch to the plate. Boesch slammed his team-leading 18th home run over the wall in right, giving the âWovles a 3-0 lead. For Boesch, it was his first home run since July 3 against Trenton. He also picked up his team-leading 58th and 59th RBI.
The Aeros would strike back against Erie reliever Brendan Wise in the top of the seventh. After tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, Wise would give up three straight singles to Carlos Santana, Beau Mills and John Drennan to load the bases for Carlos Rivero. Rivero hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Santana, making it 3-1. Mickey Hall then followed with a second straight sacrifice fly to left to bring home Mills, making it a one-run game at 3-2.
Erie struck right back in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Alex Avila grounded to third and reach on an error by the third baseman Kyle Haines as the ball went under his glove. Casper Wells then doubled off the wall in left, putting runners on second and third for Ron Bourquin. Tomlin would intentionally walk Bourquin to set up a force at any bag. Reliever Neil Wagner came in to replace Tomlin with the bases loaded and hit Santo De Leon to bring home Avila, giving Erie a 4-2 lead. Danny Worth then grounded to third and on Haines second error of the inning, drew second baseman Cristo Arnal off the bag allowing Wells to score and the bases to remain loaded. The âWolves capped off a three-run inning as Scram drew his team-leading third bases loaded walk, scoring Bourquin for a 6-2 lead.
Cody Satterwhite, who retired the final batter of the seventh as the Aeros stranded the tying run on base, tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to record his 11th save in 13 chances.
Wise (4-0) picked up the win going three innings in relief of the starter Luis Marte. He allowed two runs on five hits.
Erie has now won eight straight and 10 of 12 against the league's top club Akron. Erie is a perfect 8-0 against the Aeros at Jerry Uht Park.
The win, coupled with a Reading loss, puts the âWolves in sole possession of second place in the Southern Division, 5.5 games behind Akron.
