New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Jon Still smashed two of Portland's five home runs and finished with a career-high seven RBI as the Sea Dogs pounced on Rock Cats starter Michael McCardell, who was making his Double-A debut, and kept on rolling to a 19-1 victory on Monday night.
Portland finished the night with 17 hits, including four players - Josh Reddick, Ryan Khoury, Jorge Jimenez, and Still - who had three hits apiece. Jimenez also knocked in four runs and scored four more runs. Khoury also scored four runs.
Jimenez started the Sea Dogs' scoring attack off as he greeted McCardell to the Eastern League with a three-run homer over the right field wall in the first inning. McCardell managed to escape the second inning with a leadoff single and then three quick outs, but things turned for the worse as he was struck for three more runs in the third.
The Rock Cats answered back with a leadoff double by Brandon Roberts in the bottom half of the inning. Roberts scored on Steve Singleton's line drive single to right field to cut the Sea Dogs' lead to, 3-1.
Portland pounced on McCardell for five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by Still's three-run homer. McCardell (0-1) finished with 11 runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. He struck out seven.
The Rock Cats sent Carlos Gutierrez out to the mound in the fifth and he didn't fare much better. Gutierrez allowed two consecutive single to Reddick and Khoury to start off the inning before Jimenez doubled to left to knock in Reddick. Still added another three-run shot later in the inning.
Reddick added a two-run shot to right field off of reliever Jose Lugo in the sixth for Portland. Ryan Kalish rounded out the home run parade with a two-run blast to right field off of Anthony Slama in the ninth inning.
Adam Mills (7-5) picked up the win with five hits and one run in seven innings. He struck out five.
Alex Burnett was the lone Rock Cats pitcher who escaped without surrendering a run. He tossed a hitless eighth.
