Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve bats came alive for 11 hits and eight runs Monday night on their way to a 8-2 victory over the Reading Phillies (AA-Philadelphia Phillies) in the opening game of a four game series at Blair County Ballpark.

Seven Curve starters recorded hits as the team cracked seven extra base hits including six doubles, just one shy of the franchise record set earlier this season. Shortstop Brian Friday jacked his seventh home run of the year with a two-run shot as part of a four run third inning.

Pirates No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez enjoyed another great outing at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Alvarez is now hitting .359 for the month of July with three home runs and five doubles.

Leadoff man Jim Negrych continued his recent offensive surge as well, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Negrych is now hitting .500 (10x20) over his last five games and has torched Reading for 24 hits and nine runs in 18 contests.

Curve starter Kyle Bloom (3-5) picks up the win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. The Curve knocked Phils starter Vance Worley (6-7) for eight runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings to saddle him with his second straight loss to the Curve.

Altoona (36-60) will try to extend their win streak to three Tuesday night in game two of four against the R-Phils (52-41). Yoslan Herrera (6-0) will be aiming to stay unbeaten for the Curve in 2009 as the right handed Cuban takes on Phillies southpaw Yohan Flande (0-2, 7.58).
