New Hampshire stuns Trenton 5-4 in extras

(Manchester, NH)- New Hampshire Right fielder Nick Gorneault had the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Fisher Cats stunned Trenton 5-4 on Monday night from Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The victory was New Hampshire's first this season in extra innings (1-7).

Down 4-3 in the 10th inning, New Hampshire Shortstop Luis Sanchez singled off of Thunder Reliever Jose Valdez (0-1), and moved to second base on a bunt single by Center fielder Darin Mastrioanni. After a sacrifice bunt by Designated Hitter Scott Campbell moved the runners to second and third base, Second baseman Brad Emaus connected on a sacrifice fly RBI to score Sanchez and tie the game at 4-4. Valdez elected to intenionally walk First baseman David Cooper to put runners at the cornes with two outs. Gorneault then delivered the game-winning single over Trenton Left fielder James Cooper's head to bring home Mastroianni with the winning run. Trenton had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th inning on a solo home run by Catcher Jesus Montero. New Hampshire Reliever Zach Dials (1-1) picked up the win. He went 1 1/3 innings. Valdez took the loss as he allowed allowed two runs and three hits in 2/3 innings.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the eighth inning, Trenton scored two runs to take the lead. Second baseman Reegie Corona led off the inning with a single against New Hampshire Reliever Matt Hensley. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez followed with a single to advance Corona to third base. Hensley was then replaced by New Hampshire Reliever Leon Boyd. Boyd retired Designated Hitter Noah Hall on a ground out to put runners at second and third base. Boyd then intentionally walked Jesus Montero to load the bases. New Hampshire Reliever Edgar Estanga came on for Boyd and induced a ground ball off the bat of First baseman Chris Malec. New Hampshire Third baseman Jonathan Diaz fielded the ground ball and flipped it to Second baseman Brad Emaus for an out, but the throw to first was off the mark for an error. The fielder's choice and error allowed Corona and Nunez to score and give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. But New Hampshire, would tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-out two-run double by First baseman David Cooper.

Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Center fielder Austin Krum. The home run was his first Double-A home run, and first of the season between Tampa and Trenton. New Hampshire tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Left fielder Adam Calderone. New Hampshire did not have a hit in the game before Calderone's home run with one out in the seventh inning. Corona, Montero, Malec, and Vechionacci each had two hits in the loss for the Thunder.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Paul Bush tossed 3 1/3 hitless innings in his Thunder debut. He struck out three and walked three. New Hampshire Starting Pitcher Kenny Rodriguez hurled six innings and also received a no-decision. He scattered six hits and one run.

The Thunder play the second game of a four-game series in New Hampshire on Tuesday night. LHP Jeremy Bleich (0-3, 7.84) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire RHP Shaun Marcum (0-0, 0.00). Marcum is making a making a major league rehabilitation start. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
