Chicago Wolves News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves used tallies from Chris Chelios, Anthony Stewart, Jason Krog and Johnny Pohl to edge the Milwaukee Admirals, 4-2, at the Allstate Arena Saturday night.
Chelios and Krog led the way for Chicago (14-14-0-2) with a goal and an assist each, while blueliner Steve McCarthy dished out two assists in the win. Goaltender Peter Mannino (4-2-0) shut the door the rest of the way with 32 saves in his first start since Dec. 5.
With the game tied at two, Stewart snared the game-winner, 4:17 into the third frame. The right wing carried the puck into Milwaukee's zone, pulled up in the near circle and ripped a shot past Admirals netminder Chet Pickard.
"In the second period they really came at us hard but we held it together," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "We battled back in the third, and Stewart got a big goal for us and we managed to hang on."
Krog gave the Wolves an early lead at 3:18 of the first frame. The center positioned himself at the left corner of the crease and cranked a pass defenseman Noah Welch sent down from the blue line past Pickard, top shelf.
Milwaukee (15-9-1-4) drew even with a tally from Wacey Rabbit at 10:34 of the first period. The center shipped the puck out from behind the net and it deflected off a skate and trickled between Mannino's pads and the post.
Chelios helped the Wolves pull ahead, 2-1, with a rocket from the blue line. The defenseman took a long shot, which was blocked by an Admirals defender, then stepped into the rebound and hammered it past Pickard at 10:13 of the middle frame.
Pickard (8-5-2) turned aside 21 shots for Milwaukee.
The Admirals pulled even, 2-2, with a power-play strike by Cal O'Reilly with 49 seconds left to play in the second period. The center took a long shot from the blue line, which found its way past a screened Mannino.
Pohl added an empty net marker with eight seconds remaining in the game to ice the victory for Chicago.
The Wolves will travel to Grand Rapids following the holiday break to meet the Griffins at Van Andel Arena on Sat., Dec. 26 at 6 p.m.
